Hello,
I apologize if this question has been asked before.

Looking to purchase my first Grady-White! I noticed that in 2003 the Tournament 22 model increased from 3000lbs to 3450lbs, and the brochure says the model was "balanced" that year for the switch to four-stroke outboard power.

My question is what happens if you re-power a lighter pre-2003 (1993-2002)Tournament 225G (Grady Drive outboard bracket) with a new four-stroke outboard? Will the boat ride bow up due to the extra weight? How did they balance the boat in 2003, did they add weight to the hull at the bow some how?

Thanks.

Your stern might ride slightly lower at rest, otherwise you should see no ill effect. I have a Honda 225 on my 1986, scuppers are at waterline and haven't sunk me yet. She behaves exactly as one would expect with respect to motor trim and tabs, and exhibits no adverse characteristics throughout the throttle range. I'm not sure what 'balanced' means, either, but I think the weight increase is due more to interior design change (potty, Euro transom, etc). With all that said, I probably wouldn't be comfortable with a 300, but the boat would probably not miss a beat ...

Thanks Curmudgeon, always nice to hear from someone with personal experience. Makes me feel better about not limiting my search to 2003 and newer, the older boats before the 2003 re-design seem to be much better values.

I think the utility value decreased as Grady moved to more of a 'family' boat design, as opposed to a 'fishing' boat. I know the rear cockpit of the older 'G'' is what attracted me, but that's pretty much gone away with all ther Euro styling. Do your due deligence, there are some good values in '90s vintage 225s ...

I have a 94 225g with an 03 250hpdi. it sits a bit stern heavy, but the scuppers drain fine and it runs like a raped ape. I think this motor weighs aroung 530lbs. Boat is rated for 235hp, but a gw dealer installed the 250 and said it would be fine. so far, so good.

I love the boat, but i want to upgrade to new 250 4s yamaha as well. I figure if i move the batteries to the mid cabin starbird side and then remove the unneeded oil tank, ill be at about the same weight back there. I just need the extra 25 grand or so for the repower.

Best of luck and keep us posted.
