Fuel meter on Yamaha 6YC Information Station

Prior owner had not properly calibrated the fuel sensor for my 2017 275 Freedom. Need to have an empty tank to calibrate the fuel tank sensor, and my tank is nowhere near empty.

Question - does the Trip information measure the fuel used based on fuel flow, or based on the tank calibration? If tank calibration, it won't work to track consumption by resetting Trip info after adding fuel.

Currently estimating consumption based on miles travelled since fuel was last added.
 
Calibration requires five levels - empty / 25 / 50 / 75 / Full. Have to empty over 100 gallons (to where?) to calibrate the damn gauge for the tank! If flow meter used in trip calc doesn't depend on "tank" calibration, would be more accurate for now.
 
Please re-read - I mentioned to pull the sender OUT of the tank. I understood what you meant - which was why I recommended that.

You can also do the five levels that way by noting the float level compared to the Ohm reading using simple math of the percentage of the Ohm reading.
 
Fuel used and fuel flow do not use the tank level. That's good.
The bad.. Calibration of the tank level per Yamaha, requires an empty tank and filling it with know amounts of fuel, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, full
But that is a pain to do especially with larger tanks. Once you select the calibration/tank level option on the 6YC, there is no going back. You have to calibrate
In theory, if you have a Kuss type sender ( vertical rod), you could pull the sender and slide the ring to the appropriate spots on the rod for the required set points. Note that if the tank is full or fullish, pulling the sender can cause gas to leak into the bilge.

I use a different method. If you are electrically skilled and have the parts, you can make a set of resistors that mimic what the sender's resistance would be at the various points.
An empty tank (as far as the sender thinks) will have a resistance of 240 ohms approx, A full tank again as far as the sender thinks will read 30 approx.

I mad a little gizmo with five resistors, 240, 187, 134,81, and 30 ohms. Connect the common lead to tank ground and each of the other leads one at a time in order from empty to full to the purple sender wire (disconnected from the sender) and calibrate the 6YC. The resistance numbers are somewhat approximate and having the correct resistors to getting them can be a challenge which is why a rheostat/potentiometer works better
Instead of 5 resistors, one could use a potentiometer or resistance box to set the specific resistance.
