Hi I recently became the owner of a 2015 freedom 285 and the transducer is not working. We have a garmin xsv 7612 and the screen shows a message saying unsupported transducer. Tried going through the menus to fix it but was unsuccessful. The two possibilities I currently have thought of is that either the connection is corroded or the connection is loose from trailering it a long distance. Any body have this issue, trying to sort this out .

What type of transducer o you have would be the most important to know.
Is it a Garmin Transducer?
The transducer type is written on a tag what is usually near the plug to plug in the MFD

Yes, correct
or the cable was linched or cut and corroded internally (can be spliced)
or the transducer is not for Garmin (a connection box can help with that)

Most important is that you know what transducer you have installed!

Thanks Chris it is a GT-15M-IH 8 pin in hull transducer. I’m still working on the software to see if that is the issue with the hull ID, I didn’t consider that the wire could have been spliced so I will check for that. The previous owner was not into fishing so I assume it’s corrosion that wasn’t noticed due to lack of use. First time with a garmin as I’ve previously only used furuno

Basic shoot thru the hull transducer. The 7612xsv supports 2 transducers. You may need a transducer splitter cable. Get the old one working and leave it in the boat. Get something better if you are fishing. Depends on what type of fishing you are doing.

I ended up just ordering a new transducer. As fishing season opens too soon to not have one working. I might look at properly setting it up after the season

There is a menu in Garmin/Sonar for Transducer Diagnostics. Usually a "GT" transducer will have XID which tells the MFD/sonar what xducer you have and it sets the parameters automatically.
If they spliced or if they used an 8 pin adapter, they may not have the XID wired.
There is a hidden menu for manually entering xducer parameters

Ok, that is probably the quickest solution and if the actual GT15-M-IH is in his round box then replacing should be a reasonable fast and simple task. Just take care to not rip the plastic spacer off the hull and fill with the correct liquid.

The transducer works for basic knowing the depth below the boat, but is not really suited for fishing purposes, if you fish.
