I though you folks would get a kick out of what a fellow boater discovered while trying to figure why he was having so much trouble filling his gas tank.
We hear somewhat often about issues where the gas seems to back up in the fill and shuts off the gas flow form the fuel nozzle. That is what was happening to my friends 23 foot walkaround ( not a Grady).
It was taking forever to fill the tank.
I told him that his boat has a vapor recovery tank and that can cause the issue. I also told him that a blocked vent or vent hose or even a low loop in the vent line could cause the back pressure.
He purchased the boat new from a dealer several years ago and although the problem wasn't new, it seemed to have gotten worse. I have to hand it to him for being persistent and trying everything he could think of in addition to asking his dealer about any issues and the local mechanics.
He finally decided to open up the gunnel area by the tank where the vent line was and pulled out the plumbing.
Turns out that there was a check valve in the vent line and no it wasn't blocked. IT WAS INSTALLED BACKWARDS! Yep, directly from the factory. Who wudda thunk?

The part I don't understand i why the issue became so bad after several years of use and not right away. Regardless, flipping the direction of the check valve solved the problem.
