Anyone know what an 89 204c came with as far as steering helm? Mine seems to be skipping gears, has excessive play and locking up. Locked up right before I was about to go under a bridge today. Cable is only 4yrs old and slides smoothly.I will get a pic attached, looking for a replacement unit, Thanks

Here is a pic of my Teleflex helm steering box in the first pic. I still need to clean up the wiring..The 2nd pic looks just like mine. The 3rd pic is what I think I need for a replacement (Teleflex T5000), but I am not sure, Thanks.

You're on the right track. When you replace, definitely go with no feedback unit. You could always go with the Baystar hydraulic system designed for smaller outboards.

I just replaced the one on my 87 204C , It did the same thing, locked up tight, I took it apart and sure enough two-three teeth broke off and locked between the gears. Mine was the "Big T" Teleflex. Looked just like that. but my cable threaded on. didn't have the clips.

Is your cable a quick connect? if you are keeping the existing cable you need a helm that will work with it and fit the same opening/mounting holes
Teleflex is part of Seastar.....go to the seastar solutions site and look thru the Products/Mechanical steering for your choices
http://www.seastarsolutions.com/products/mechanical-steering/nfb-safe-t-ll-2/

Read the "Applications" to figure out if its for you.
Keep in mind that they may fit exactly even though they look very different.

I would suggest an NFB type helm like the NFB 4.2 Rotary

Once you decide on a model, you can shop for the specific one.

Now is a great time to check your motor for ease of movement. Old motors bind up from dry old grease at the top of the swivel shaft. With cable disconnected and motor down, you should very easily be able to swing the motor left/right by hand.
If not, you should fix that.

Thanks, yes I think mine is also the Teleflex SH5000 Big T with the quick connect that you see here.

Here was my old one. It was the "SH5000 Big T" but with the threaded connections on both ends not quick connect. Just make sure that it has the proper connection for your cable. The install was easy except when the big nut on the cable slid down the cable and disappeared below the deck.

Thanks for the pics, that looks a lot like mine. Did your cable end not look like mine? I just want to try to confirm that what I have is the quick connect style cable. My cable was changed in 2015, so I'm hoping that's still good and usable. Thanks for the help

Thanks great info. I spoke with a tech at Seastar who make the SH5000P unit. He said you can use the optional adapter (pictured) for it which screws on and allows you to use the quick connect style cable. I should have this adapter already on my old helm since my cable looks like quick connect style. I'm pretty sure I'm ok at the motor since it does swing in both directions pretty easily, but I will shoot more grease in the fittings back there.

Our ends definitely look different. I had the two big threaded nuts. one for the cable and the other for the excess cable.

Its actually the same helm as yours, mine just has that quick connect adapter pictured above that's screwed onto the bottom threaded opening.

That pretty much looked like mine too with the teeth broken and jammed it up but good. Glad you got the new one in and it was a easy fix.

Thanks for helping confirm it was the correct helm I was ordering!
