Anyone painted their old helm chairs? I upgraded a bit with new cushions but the finish on the backs and arm rest looks bad. Seems like they would come apart easy.
thanks
Years ago, I had a friend who painted his seats with Rustoleum spray. I was surprised how it came out. Not bad at all.
There are paints specifically for plastics and assuming the armrest are plastic ( as opposed to vinyl covered) painting may be a decent option.
I have painted plastic with KRYLON-FUSION and have had good results.
I would recommend pressure washing, let dry, then wipe down with a plastic friendly solvent (wear gloves, so you don't get skin oils on the parts). Leave the parts in the sun to get as warm as possible, but not hot (I doubt white would get that hot anyway). Orient the parts vertivcally and spray. Be very patient and spray slowly. Follow the instructions on the can for building up several coats.

I had those same helm seats and used Mr Clean magic erasers on them and they cleaned right up to almost new, give that a try first you may be surprised.
just to clarify, new cushions, not painting the metal it is fine, only the white armrest, back and seat which has very worn finish, not mildew/dirt. I will try a good prep and krylon and give update
I believe the seatback is HDPE, right? That's going to be really tough to get paint to stick to for any amount of time... and then it's going to look worse than it does now. I'm not sure what material the armrests are. But I'd really caution against painting until you first try a really good cleaning - maybe an aggressive cleaning. HDPE is different than normal plastic. Once they're cleaned up, any "wear" will mostly disappear.
