Tournament 223
Good afternoon,

I have a 1997 Grady White 223 Tournament that I’m currently trying to repower. The vessel does not currently have a motor hanging off of the transom. The previous owner advised that a Yamaha 225 four stroke was being used before. I have a 2006 Suzuki 250 four stroke. Would this motor be compatible with my boat? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

As long as you are not exceeding max hp you should be ok. Get the transom checked for water intrusion.

With that being said, would you have issues with putting a 250hp? I believe the 225 saltwater series used to weigh about 540 pounds. The Suzuki 250 weighs approximately 590 pounds. Is this enough to cause issues?? I appreciate the help.

50# shouldn't affect you much, you can move some stuff forward to help. Still need to check transom for water damage.

Biggest problem I see is you are exceeding the HP rating for your hull. Getting insurance will be an issue. If ever in an accident, a savvy lawyer will put all the blame on you because your boat is over powered from it's intended HP rating. In today's world, everyone is sue happy, just waiting for a reason.

Thank you for the help!

I just realized that the motor is a 30 inch shaft. Would a jack plate work for this application to get it to the desired 25 inch?
