Got a last minute call to run a tuna trip for my buddy on his new 42' Express. We ran out to the Hudson and stayed away from the fleet, we had nobody near us, and only saw 4 sets of lights all night, and they were far away as it was. We had a slow night, broke off 1 tuna and 1 mahi. Before sun up we hooked up on a big eye but broke it off after a 40min battle, it took blistering runs like I have never heard or seen before on my tackle!!! We had 560yds of 80lb line on the 30W, the first run took up to the mono wraps below the backing....maybe 10wraps!!! We got it back to the 100yd topshot and the fish took off again, it did this 3 times before running deep on the fifth run and as it came higher the fish ended up parting us off in the wheels with maybe 40yds of line left on the reel...we have a feeling we were going to be spooled regardless if we didn't break it off. After the first few feet we fought the fish at full!! Over 32+lbs of drag, and this did not even slow this fish, it was our only choice to prevent being spooled each time...yikes was it scary doing that with only 60lb seaguar flouro, which never failed or parted!! Wish we could have boated the fish but thats fishing. Our karma was good though, right after breaking the fish off we had an all out blitz with 75-90lb yft. We loaded the boat with our 4 man limit in drop and reel fishing, pulled the anchor and ran home. Most fish were caught on jigs, the rest were on squid, sards did not eaten. Had to have a buddy run to our numbers for an ice drop as the fish box was full and we were low on ice in the transom kill box. After dropping us the bait the boat put 2 yft in the boat, released a rat and came tight on a big eye directly on our numbers and put a roughly 175-200lb big eye in the boat. Congrats to them and for there good dead in dropping us some ice, they surely got paid back with that big eye!! The rest of the fleet had a slow time out there. Second best report from the Hudson was a buddy of ours with 3 lft 1 yft and a 200lb sword, other then that guys had 1's and none's. One of the best tuna blitz's I've seen in years. We left them boiling around the boat as we pulled the anchor. Check out you tube videos:jdcangling
