Hello. So I recently Purchased a 1982 Grady White Seafarer 22'. for $500 bucks with a title and Trailer. I do believe it has Original Motor and Previous Owner was an older fella that kept the boat in Florida when he lived there came back to South Carolina in the past 10 years and the boat has sat for 3 years. but IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION. the previous owner said the reason he is he is selling it is cause someone came and stole a bunch of Wiring off the boat and the entire switch panel.
I am 24 Years old and Very Excited for this Journey!

Inboard Motor looks to be 5.7 V8. HERES WHERE THE QUESTIONS START:

down on the Harmonic Balancer I went to try and turn the Motor over and there isn't bolt heads. say on a truck down there there are bolt heads so you can turn and it will Turn the motor. how do I Turn this motor to Ensure it is Free ( before I hook a Battery and jump it LOL ). ALSO I PULLED TWO SPARK PLUGS AND THERE WASNT ANY RUST ON THE INSIDE OF THEM JUST ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE MOTOR. INSIDE WAS PRETTY CLEAN for sitting a few years.

the Oil Looks to have some water in it. today as I type this I just sucked the oil out ( with one of those hand Pumps you see on YouTube) and it had water in it. milky and just gross. I thought I got all of it. and I go to Fill it back up with the Quicksilver 4-Stroke Marine Engine Oil SAE 25W-40. and I went to check it it was milky again. what am I doing Wrong.

what carb came on these. I took the air filter off and this thing is SEASED TO THE MAX. almost nothing will move.

I am sure I will have more questions. PLEASE can someone shed some Light!?

CBT, that should be a Chevy truck motor, if it is original. Isn't there a big nut in the center of the pulley?
Run cheap oil through there until you get the milk out, no need to wash it out with champagne.

Efx has a point - engine is likely to have a number of issues to diagnose and fix. You may want to scrap whatever’s left of the engine and try to convert to an outboard with a bracket. If you do want to tinker with the engine, expect headaches but you’ll learn a lot and you don’t have a lot of money into it yet. Do the labor yourself and you’ll save money. If you have to pay someone else you’ll end up upside down in terms of spending way more than it’s worth.

Thanks y’all! I have pondered the idea of converting to an outboard. What size motor would push this 22’ Beast decent and semi good gas mileage?
If I was to mess with the motor I would do labor myself. Truck motors I know semi well. (Big fan of 80s model Chevys)

To answer your questionneed to find out what the max horsepower rating on that boat ! A lot of people have 250 HP And very happy with it .
GW did improvements on the newer 228 with the stringers and transom and have a max horsepower rating of 300HP.
And there are a lot of satisfied 228 owners out there with 225 hp

here is the link two owners manuals of GW might knock you for your year but a lot of good information in this owners manual document

there’s a Lotta good information out there on converting it to Outboard on the web and YouTube do a lot of research before converting you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches !

Sounds like a fun young-mans project you have.
Water intrusion could be from a couple things. Hope it's not from corroded cooling passages (holes rusted through the water jackets). Try pressurizing the cooling system to see if you have any internal leaks. If you do, then you have a good V-8 anchor.
You will likely be able to find a replacement inboard for much less than an outboard, but you have to deal with the outdrive and seals etc.

On your initial Harmonic balancer question: Every crank should be drilled for one. Maybe just the bolt is missing? Pull All the sparkplugs and hit the starter w/ 12 volts.

That’s a lot of boat for $500. You should do alright with it.
If I were you, I’d maybe put a time limit or cap on hours spent on that old inboard. It likely would take a lot to get to the point where it’s actually reliable.
not sure what black box you referred to - the picture of the gunnel? It looks like a swivel mount for a Scottie downrigger or something.
Also not sure what you mean by ‘what card do we think this is’... autocorrect from carb?

how would i go about pressurizing the cooling system?

Auto parts stores have hand pumps with radiator fittings - If you have a heat exchanger system, that may work. If not, then you will have to get creative: Find your water pickup and fit a hose to the inlet and block off the outlet.

So this mercrusier 5.7 has a Rochester quad on it that is Locked up Solid. What carb should I put on this. Holly or Eldebrock.. what els is there.. I don’t know what to put on it. I just plan to take on lake and go Offshore. I don’t need fancy and don’t need a lot of power. Want to ride in style. Lol

So.. I pulled this motor out. Now I’m thinking about repower. How do I know or how do I find out about an Outboard motor bracket.
(Switching stern drive to outboard) thanks.

You can have a local guy fab one or order from a place like Armstrong. I went with a local that I have used in the past. I know he isn't a kid right out of trade school working for a company, but to each their own. You will need to basically rebuild your transom. There are some good forums online that guys have done a good job documenting.

What outboard are you thinking?

Head over to bateau in the rebuild section for the transom help. If you order from Armstrong or another company like that lead times maybe quite long currently.

I wouldn’t go under a 150 probably. I think that would be similar to that mercursier 5.7. But I’m just tossing ideas around in my head. Not sure what’s the best plan. To rebuild a motor or repower.
probably the safest and reliable would be outboard be a 83 5.7
