Anyone using this as a backup GPS/Nav system onboard?
The reviews seem pretty good. Any thoughts?

The IPAD screen would be better than a Garmin handheld, etc.

I am looking into this myself. From what I understand, there are waterproof cases available. I know of a sail-boat racer that uses Ipads at multiple locations on the boat. I am in the process of finding out what he uses for software and as an antenna. Will post as soon as I hear...geo

Thanks George

I know the company "Bad Elf" has a 30 pin GPS antenna that plugs into the bottom of the iPAD.

I've done lots of research on this, trying to avoid shelling out 1500 Euros on a single-mission digital gadget (the chartplotter).

Here's your man:
http://blog.francis-fustier.fr/en/traverser-latlantique-avec-un-ipad/ - this guy went accross the Atlantic with an iPad.

As for me, I'm still not convinced and I guess I'll be going the Lowrance/Garmin way. I want to connect to NMEA2000 network and fuel sensors - the solution for iPad is there (involves a wireless NMEA2000 repeater = wireless LAN on board - no thanks, no IP address problems while I'm away from my office computer...and definitely no wireless networks for me, thanks).

Mind you, the Navionics software and maps are super-cheap, compared to the chip version:

Looks like a great second device, though. Can also listen to music, read the paper and even a movie at night with the missus... possibly overkill for a getaway weekend...

I confirmed that the sailer I know does use the IPAD with INAVx. I am still trying to verify if and what external antena he uses and which waterproof case. I will be purchasing the Ipad as soon as the new version is released, rumor has it this April. Then, using it as a GPS for both my boat and when I fly. I have been able to find external antena's in my aviation searches but not in my marine searches. I am assuming that the same one will work well for both. I wish I were more technical, cause it seems really cool. The link is not in English, so it was difficult to follow his trek across the atlantic.

click on the flag icons on the right side of page - you get a draft English translation...

Sounds like a multiply use solution. Any idea how much money is involved? When I add up boat, car, plane all with the same basic use I wonder how cost effective the Ipad becomes.
