Hello All,
Looking for anybody who has done a windlass install on an older Gulfstream. I have a 1989, and have purchased a Lewmar 550, with 230' of 8 plaet rode with 20' of chain for a total of 250'. I have heard of some who installed it in the area vacated by removing the lifting ring, while other have installed it directly on the access hatch. I have an appt this Wed to have it installed, but want to gather as much information as I can, to share with the mechanic as to best placement and any other issues any of you faced while installing one. I would prefer the more secure mount vacated by the lifting ring, but Grady suggested putting it as far back as possible, which means the hatch cover. Also, where did you place the toggle switch and the breaker.

Thoughts, suggestions and photos would be greatly appreciated.

I'm dealing with the same dillema on my 24. I would prefer to leave the forward ring/cleat as that is a structural component. Theoretically you are still supposed to cleat off the rode even with the windlass. I think I am going to reinforce the locker door with some 3/4 ply and go from there.

I also see that we are from the same general vacinity. Have you contacted Raybo for quote?

I did have it installed on the pulpit in the area vacated by the lifting ring/tieoff.
My theroy here was that I never anchor in water deeper than say 30-40', and so the 250' of combined anchor chain and 1/2" - 8 plait rode should be sufficient. Assuming the 8 plait rode falls as nicely as everyone tells me it does, I think I will be able to get away with this location. However if this is not
the case and I run into problems, I can always move it back to the locker cover and then go through the process of reinforcing it. I did take it out and anchor in real world situations over the weekend and it did perform perfectly, so - so far - so good. I still need to install a cleat in front of the windlass to tie it off, and to tie up at the dock. I did not go to raybo, I did go to a local guy here in Lindenhurst who was recommended and he did a great job for me. He also installed my new Garmen GPS/fish finder ( 541s) and the price was pretty good. Good luck Boss !
