I'am interested in a possible purchase of a Seafarer 228G. Probably between somewhere between a 2000 and 2008. Would be interested in knowing if there are any particular problems areas that I should be aware of with this model and age boat or any areas I should investigate before purchasing. I probably would be interested in a Yamaha 4-stroke as the engine choice. Not sure if there are any particular engine series which should be avoided . Any help and input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

The 228 was redesigned in 1998 and continues as essentially the same boat as today. There have been some minor color revisions, cushion changes, and a relocation of the switch panel, but everything else is the same.

From 1998-2001 they were usually rigged with either a 200 or 225 OX66. Great motors by Yamaha....a bit thirsty but would run forever. Some 2000-01 boats may also show up with the 200 HPDI which is a great motor. If you come across one with the rare 250 HPDI, run from it.

From 2002-2004, the boats were almost exclusively rigged with F225s. These are the motors that you have to do your homework on as the exhaust corrosion problem is a real issue. By 2005, Yamaha had come out with a redesign for the F225 and had also come out with the F250 which did not have the issue.

I've owned a 228 with a 200 OX66, as well as two 225 Tournaments (dual console but same hull design)...expect top end in the 41-42 range and a comfortable cruise at 29-31.

Thanks for your reply. Sounds like the boats are usually not the issue but the propulsion could be . Is there a concern with transom and/or stringer rot or damage.
Thanks again for your reply. It is very helpful.
