hello everyone, well something went south in on my starboard ox 66 225, no alarms and was @3500rpm cruise. The block is trashed and with 500-600 hrs on both engines I"m tempted to do a powerhead but the wife does want to get away from the smokers. Question#1 the boat is rated by grady for a max of 450 hp I am trying to find a set of used(decent hours) twins, I am finding a lot of 250's and 300's even a set of verado 275's. I would like to know who has went more than the 225's and the good and the bad, I have read other post and the scuppers and weight are a concern but I really want to know if this is safe for the boats transome. Sorry I have a 1998 272 sailfish w/ euro transome.

1) Your insurance company will frown if you go beyond the rated power.

2) Have you considered going with a factory certified, re-built? I did that with my blown OX-66 and it came out to about $5,500-$6,000 to get basically a new engine with a 1-year warranty. This is where they trade in your trashed engine for one that's been factory re-built. I got $500 credit for my trashed engine. I had it done at a local, Yamaha certified shop... If you do a re-build swap or fix the blown one, find out "why" it trashed. In my case, it was an O2 sensor that had never been serviced and I did not know about them at all as the latest/newest owner........ until the pistons started letting go! :bang You don't want to blow the other engine!

3) If you swap brands (merc, etc), your costs will go up as you'll need all new gauges, throttles, fuel lines, etc. A G-W with Mercs will also be harder to sell later down the road and you'll probably get less for it. Many of us would never consider buying a used G-W with Mercs.....

what kind of warranty did you get on that factory rebuild. I really want to stay with yamaha and i may just need to wait awhile for the right set-up, I have a boat show coming up and I might find something there.

I also lost one of my OX66 motors. I chose to go with 2 200 hp HPDI motors that were rebuilds. The boat yard took my engins in trade. Including installation it cost me $12.000. The HPDI motors gave me 5 mph more speed at the same rpm of 4000 and the mpg went up from 1.2 to 1.75, and with half of the oil usage. When I did this 2 years ago the light weight V6 motors were not out yet. Even today I would nake the sane choice.

500 hrs isn't much for an OX66. How old is the engine? How much $ do you have burning a hole in your pocket? $5000 for a new powerhead vs. likely $30,000 for new twins is a significant difference that you won't recoup in fuel savings.

Hi, I have the same hull which was repowered with f225 4 strokes. the scuppers do sit mostly above the water line except when both fuel tanks are filled 100%. the hull is rated for 450hp max. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!!

Thanks guys, both motors are 1998 models, I would really like to save the money but I would also like the 5 year warranty if I got new motors. I do plan on keeping this boat for a very long time (I hope). marty did you have ox66 225's or 200's. ckjr did you see a difference in performance and fuel burn.

I've wondered if Grady may be able to provide information on powering older boats with newer, lighter more efficient engines? My 228 is listed at 250hp but the new offshore 300hp's are actually lighter than last years 250hp's. And something to consider; I've noticed that since the new Yamaha Offshore series have become available, there are some pretty decent deals on previous, even new in the box model F250's.

the fuel burn is roughly 1.5 to 1.7 statute mpgs., running 4000 rpms 25 knots, 17-18gph fuel burn rate. I bought the boat in 2005 freshly repowered so i cannot comment on the prior setup. the boat with the 225 4s runs great, top end around 45 mph @ 6000 rpms.

thanks everyone, I'm going to hold off to see what specials the boat shows will have, and give me some time for more funds!!

It's attitude like this that benefits Merc fans like me (I'm not mad... I appreciate what you do for my wallet  ). In late 2004, I bought one year old twin Merc 150 EFIs for $7,800 with guages, cables, harnesses, and new SS props. They were, and still are spotless and running sweet. The gent who sold them was installing Zuke 4-strokes.

I just sold a 240G with a 10 year old 225 Merc. Optimax that was the best motor I ever owned. If my 283 hadn't already had F250's it would have had Merc's installed.

Not saying anything against Yamaha's, mine are preforming fine and I am well satisfied with them. If 10 years from now my total expense on repairs (not counting maintenance) for the Yammi's is $300 or less, they will be as good or better than my Optimax. I hope they are.
