Fueling up at the marina and the nozzle got stuck. Had to yank it out and my gas cap is now in Davie Jones' locker. West Marine did not have a replacement. Anyone happen to have the part number for a 235 Freedom? Going to the dealership tomorrow to see if they have any in the parts dept.

What a fiasco. Called the dealership and talked to the parts person. The lady couldn't figure out how to get the part number for the cap so she took my hull number and said she would call me back. I called Grady White directly and within 3 minutes I had the part number, but they don't separate the cap from the tube....it's one assembly. The Grady guy said to call Perko to find out the part number for just the cap. The Perko guy gave me the cap part number and I was able to find it on Amazon. Will be here tomorrow.

You would think the local Grady dealership would know the part number and have a stock of them right there. I spent 20 years in the military in aviation maintenance and understand how to manage parts. Something as high-usage as gas caps should be in stock at all times. Anyway, here are the part numbers for future reference:

Perko Sealed Ratcheting Cap Fills with Pressure Relief for 1-1/2" Hose - Angled Neck

Part number for the whole thing - 0660DPGCHR
Part number for just the cap - 0660DPG99A

Yeah, especially for something as common as a Perko cap... granted, these are a "newer" cap, but still....

It could be that the lady who answered the phone doesn't really do "parts" - that's understandable. Lots of calls come in on Monday mornings and figuring out the parts program is not as easy as it sounds for someone that doesn't do it all the time. She's probably relaying your message to someone in parts... who probably has 29 sticky notes already on his/her desk :)

I just find it very surprising that the biggest boat dealership in the area doesn't have a drawer full of replacement gas caps in the parts warehouse for the boats they sell. If this one from Amazon fits, I'm ordering another to keep on the boat as a spare.

Shouldn't the cap have a retaining chain to prevent loss?

This particular one uses a plastic retainer. Somehow it popped the whole thing off when pulling the nozzle out. Not sure why Grady went cheap on the gas cap.

Agree. Did the dealer at least get back to you with the part info (once the lady forwarded the info to the parts department)?

I know dealerships are swamped and are still running with smaller departments and/or the people they can find to hire aren't really "the best". But one would think that within a day or two, you would get a response back.

No response. My salesman got involved. She said she is sorting it out for me.

Gas cap came in today and it fit perfectly! Did not bother attaching that stupid plastic leash. Just going to be more careful filling up and put the cap in a safe place. Also ordering a second cap as a spare in the boat tool box.

That's a new one to me; A gas cap added to the spares inventory:)

Welcome to boating!

The bead chains break too.

Mine are broken and I carefully remove the caps and place them in the boat.

With a chain, you get on plane and notice that the cap is flailing about. It breaks off as soon as you make eye contact....
