I am looking at a 2001 Islander which has been repowered with twin 200 Honda 4-strokes. Is this too much weight for this boat?

thanks for the spec's. Eventhough it states max hp of 500, I wonder it at the time they anticipated the weight of the 4-strokes vs. the 2-stroke engines.

Here is a copy of an email from Grady Customer Relations:

Thank you for your e-mail, Frank.

The hull bottom was lengthened and flush with the transom in 2001 model
year. It provided more support for the heavier four stroke engines and
also provided a longer running surface, which can improve the overall
performance of the boat. If you have any other questions, please let us
know.

What Grady-White boat(s) are you interested in?: Islander

What is the nature of your request?: I am looking at used Islanders in
different year models. Question about the hull. Apparently some model
years the hull does not go the transom - it stops and steps up. What
years did this change? Pros and cons of both styles?

Do your Hondas weigh a lot more than these Yammies?

From Honda's site:

Recommended Transom Height
(L) 508 mm/20 inches
(X) 635 mm/25 inches
(XX) 762 mm/30 inches

Dry Weight
(L) 267 kg - 588 lbs.
(X) 272 kg - 599 lbs.
(XX) 277 kg - 610 lbs.

From Yami's site:
Weight* 466 lb. (212 kg)

Is #133 a lot (each motor)?

Yes, I think it is.

If I was going that far, I would put Yamaha F225, or even F250 on there.

But if you have a good dealer in the area, I would recommend the Suzuki DF175. Strong engine, with a dry weight of 485.

We might have repowered with those instead of the F150s, but they just weren't available at the time.

BTW, the F150s are really nice on this hull, too.

I have the Yamaha F150 four strokes on a pre-2001 hull. They are about 470 lbs. each. This is a four cylinder block. I love the way the boat performs with these engines except I would like a lower plaining speed. The 2001+ hull may improve that behavior as would more power and less prop.

The F200 and F225 are V-6 block at 583 lbs. The F250 is 604 lbs.

With F225 the boat would be a rocket. Probably faster then you could practically run without risking a mutuny.

The problem with these "little" boats is the short water line length and the weight of the boat. In a head sea, especially with some swell, you need to go slower to stay in the water.

If the Honda's are 200 hp and 466 lbs. you should be fine.

According to Grog's post, the 25" Honda 200 weighs 599 lbs. I think that is a lot of extra weight - more than the Yamaha F225. That's why I suggested the F225.

After over 600 hrs on the F150s with the Black SS props in 17" pitch, I changed to a pair of PowerTech OFS3 - 16" pitch. Lost just a little bit of WOT speed, but the props have a lot more bite and overall performance is better. We punched into a two-three foot head sea for 15nm today, running at 3200-RPM and making 14.5-15.0kts, on a nice slow plane.

I stand corrected. I misread the post. The 200 hp Honda's are heavier than the 150 Yamaha.

On the other hand jeddy is looking at a boat that has been re-powered already. Yamaha 225's are not an option.

DUH, I should have read more carefully.

I still think they are a bit heavy for that hull. I would have to see how it sits in the water, and how it rides and handles.

Grady factory advice on repowering older Gradys with 4 strokes is commonly ignored. Ignoring factory advise may or may not matter, proceed accordingly.

I bet the 200 Hondas were bought at a discounted good deal, over the more popular 225s , of the same block and weight.

I was mistaken, they are actually Honda 225's. In an earlier post I believe someone said that they weighed the same as the 200's.
