Mildew / Codensation issues

I have a 2005 Release. I have had problems with my C120 Screen getting a build up of condensation inside the screen that makes it difficult to read. I have returned the unit to Raymarine and they replaced it with a new one. Sadly, this new unit has developed the same problem. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem.

My theory is that because the 283 has the retractable electronics console, it is not getting the needed air circulation when not in use to prevent the build up of condnesation.

I have also experienced a tremendous amount of mildew growth in the battery storage compartment which is directly beneath the electronics console. I leave open the console/head compartment whenever possible to get some air flow to this area. I have also hung moisture absorbing bags inside the area.

I am about to send back this unit but wonder if it is a Grady design issue and not a Raymarine issue.

The boat has either been in a slip or out on a mooring. The boat is also used on a regular basis.

Any thoughts and or comments would be appreciated. Thank you.
 
I have the retractable electronics compartment on our 305 Express and have had no problems whatsoever with any kind of moisture on my electronics....this may be a Raymarine issue.

Ditto, i had it on the Bimini, on the 330 express with the e series and now on the 336 with garmins, no problem. Do you use the "no dump" or anything else to absord the condesation? If you have dock power use the hot rod, i have one it works wonders.
 
Just about everyone I know what that unit has had that problem. I know of 14 guys who had them sent back last year, Raymarine has had a bit of issues with their screens lately, they make great products, but the screen issues are enough for me to stay away from them for a while to come. 2/3 of the guys I know did NOT have retractable screens, and had either locking electronics boxes, or flush mounts with the Ray cover over them. It has to do with the change in temp that the helm expereinces near where the electronics are at. No electronics box has more air circ then a retractable box, infact the retractable probably lets more in. Flush mount might be worse if your in a climate where it gets cool at night and warm in the day. This is a known Raymarine issue, nothing to do with location of the mounting or the installation or design of the box itself.
 
The battery storage compartment may be better served if it is closed at evening / night, and opened during the warming part of the day only.
 
Raymarine C-80

I'm looking at a 77 Kingfish that has a C-80 that is a couple years old and is flush mounted should I be concerned?
