Mounting 4-Stroke on transom of 92' 24 ft Explorer

I have a 1992 24ft 244 Explorer where there is a cut out and the motor is mounted directly on the transom. I would like to repower with a 4-stroke. My concern is if the size and weight of the 4 stroke will fit and operate within the space allowed on my boat? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I suggest you email Grady White customer service with specs on proposed 4 stroke. (esp. weight). They will be helpful.

I went thru same thing when I repowered my 1993 Escape 209. (I installed 200 HPDI)

Have your hull # handy.

I also suggest a thorough transom inspection to look for any water intrusion.

How much extra weight are you thinking to add?
 
I have a 1993 explorer 24 with grady drive (enclosed transom with a bracket). I added a yamaha 225 4 stroke several years ago--No problem. I agree, call grady white with all the specs. If it does work out, not only inspect the transom, but check out all the scuppers or thru hull fittings. You may want to replace any plastic fittings with bronze or stainless. As you know, the 4 stroke is heavier than the 2 stroke motors and the boat will sit lower in the water. The latest yamaha 4 strokes are lighter than prior models....good luck
 
Not sure about the size constraint but I have a 94 Explorer with the bracket with 2008 twin 150 2 strokes which weigh 425lbs each. If you are going for the single i would say weight is going to be fine plus you are getting rid of the weight of the remote oil tank. I would say that this boat can't comfortabley take any more weight than i have on the back. Just make sure that transom is still nice and strong before you spend all that money.
 
Since the boat had the option of twins, one 4 stroke V6 shouldn't be an issue. Calling GW wouldn't hurt and having their blessing would be nice. With the boat's age and the open transom there is a good possibility the transom may need work, I'd put a new transom in the budget.
 
Repowered with a 2005 F250 here. Not as fast out of the hole, sits a little lower in the water (weight), but the benefits are worth the upgrade (quieter, better fuel economy). Like others have said, check your transom out while you are at it, mine was wet from a cracked thru transom fitting and I didn't even know it. Go for it, and don't look back.
