I am considering a purchase of a sailfish but am running into difficulties determining the model of the boat. The HIN indicates it's a 1994 model 252G but there is an original decal on the boat that reads "Sailfish 27". I spoke with someone at Grady White and they told me that the 252 and the 272 were the same boat, the 252 was discontinued in 1995 and the first year for the 272 was 1995. However the difference in models appears to be significant in establishing a pre-purchase value. Are there any characteristics that easily makes a distinction between the two models?

try going to gradywhite.com and go to Owners manuals. You might have to enter some address info but then you can get free downloads of owners manuals.
Look at a 1994 252 and a 1995 272, see the difference.

In case anyone has the time or interest, a helpful resource for this site would be a list of models made in each year, with a link to each model's brochure.

BeaufortBoy, did you make any progress on this? As a '95 272 owner I'm curious.

GW is known for magically increasing the length of their boats from time to time.
The 36 is now a 37. The 28 Marlin is now a 30. The same is likely for your boat. Some say it is that the hull now runs all the way under the entire deck. Some say that euro transom design added it. Some say it is $ per foot and trying to maximize the latter so the cost looks the same per foot as others. Who knows... If GW told you the answer, I'd say it is good info.
