well here goes.. short story

boat was taking on water. found leak, comming from transom, pulled motors and this is where I am :hmm . what do I need to do and what is the best way to go about it.

how do I tell if its a full transom replacement, or just a repair?
to do this right what should the budget be and what extra should I do?
what algrip color matches gradys color the best?
and just any advice would help.
Thank you in advance for any help.

I think we need more information and perhaps some pics so we know exactly what and how bad your problem is. Assuming boat is out of water on land (hopefully), you can remove some screws in lower transom that are holding transducer, trim tabs, etc., and see if you find that water drains out of holes. If your transom core has been wet for a long time, theres a good chance the core may be compromised and need to be recored. Where was the leak coming in, and for how long? If you have engines off, remove aluminum molding around transom outer edge and probe the screw holes and core area you can see with molding off.

You may want to contact a good marine surveyor that has a moisture meter, and they can give you an idea if core is a little wet in some areas, or completely saturated. If complete core needs replaced, be advised it is a big labor intensive job. I've done it, and if I had to do again, I would consider an epoxy based pourable core product that hardens up and is said to be stronger and more resilient than wood, although I have no idea if this is true, bit it would be a lot easier.

I had the same problem with an 85 Trophy Pro I used to own. Decided to donate the boat because it was not worth fixing (also needed 2 new motors). Anyway, do an extensive search on transom repair Grady white. There are some new ways that you could actually repair the transom yourself if you have the time and aptitude. Check it out. Replacements costs in the $5k range if someone else does it. Good luck. Steve
