New 208 Owner-Performance Question

Hello,

I just became the new owner of a 1993 208 with a hardtop and 150 Yamaha. I pick the boat up on Saturday and wanted to get all of your feedback on what to expect as far as performance out of that package. I have heard high 30's as top speed but didnt know if this was with or without hardtop. Also what rpm do you need to run to go 32-33 mph in this boat?

I have a 1995 208 with a 225 Yammie 2-stroke and a kicker on the back. I can get up to 41 MPH with trim tabs up and a full boat (fuel, water, bait tank, two riders and a six pack of Coke). It maxes at 5500 RPM although I think I should be able to get a few more RPM than that. Already spent too much on my new purchase to justify trying out new props.

Congrats on the new boat. We have a 1995 208 with 175 SWS Yamaha. Top speed for us is about 35 MPH at 5300 RPM with bottom paint, radar arch, 32 gallon Kodiak bait tank, full fuel etc. We typically cruise at about 28 MPH and 4200 RPM burning 10 GPH, depending, of course, on ocean conditions. Above 4400 RPM it really starts to suck fuel and our economy suffers. With trim tabs our fuel economy curve is pretty flat from 3600-4400 RPM (21 - 31 MPH) ranging from 2.5 to 2.7 MPG. At 4500 RPM, we drop to about 2.2 MPG. By 5300 RPM, we're 1.3 MPG.

Your 150 should be pretty comparable (assuming it's the same vintage carbed Yamaha with the correct prop), but probably about 1 or 2 MPH slower and about 1 GPH less for a given RPM, would be my guess.

Biscayne: First, welcome to the forum.

I had a 1995 208 with a 150 HPDI on it. I got 30 mph at 4,000 rpm and about 2.5 mpg. Top end was about 38 mph with the bimini top folded down.

Also, about halfway through ten years of ownership, I added bennett trim tabs. That made a good ride better. I recommend them.

I really appreciate seeing these posts showing the speed/fuel consumption of various engine configurations. I have an 89 Overnighter with a 2000 Johnson 200 HP motor and at 4000 RPM I'm seeing about 32 MPH and 2.5 MPG. Based on what I'm seeing here, there's aren't too bad. When I push it to WOT, my Northstar fuel flow meter is registering about 23 GPH and my GPS is registering right around 40 MPH - sometimes a bit below and sometimes a bit over.

Thanks for all the responses. I have a hardtop which will affect speed but I just hope she can carry her own weight along with 2-4 passengers at 30-32 mph... How much does the hardtop really affect performance?

The hard top adds weight like adding a person and a half or so. My 2001 has a 150 Yami and will top out at about 39 mph at about 5200 revs although I tend to cruise at about 4200 rpm or approx 30 MPH.
My experience with added passengers is that top end is not greatly affected but time to plane is.

Since a full tank of fuel on that boat adds about 500 pounds, it will make more of a difference than having or not having a hard top, as opposed to lets say a 1/4 tank of gas.

If i can see 38-39 mph tops i will be very satisfied. I sold a new Donzi Classic to get into this boat so the speed will take some getting used to but it will be a much sweeter ride behind the eisenglass and tall windshield.

My father used to own a 248 Voyager with a 225 ox66 and that was a 41 mph boat that we took from Miami to Andros Island and Bimini a few times. It was always up to par as far as power. I just hope the 208 will be the same.
