Hello all,

I’m the newby too the group and also new to GW.I have been reading post and there is a lot of great info here. I have an 05 Marlin powered with 05 250 Yamahas with the dreaded exhaust corrosion issues. The question I have is if the port engine is louder than the starboard does that mean it needs a new exhaust?

I have an 02 F225 and just did the exhaust two years ago. The only real way to tell is to drop the lower unit and have them scoped. I had zero symptoms and the engine ran great. The only thing I noticed was some white pitting on the exhaust. When my mechanic took the power head off the exhaust was starting to crumble.

I also changed the oil pump while the head was off.

Are saying say that your motors haves the dreaded exhaust issues or 'may' have based on the year and model. The louder motor may have nothing to do with the exhaust corrosion or it may but regardless, if you have the issue, you need to have the maintenance done. Although the scoping of the exhaust with the LU dropped may show the problem, it doesn't necessarily tell you if the oil pan is also corroding. If the pan wears through, water gets into the powerhead and that is what causes the catastrophic damage cases.. What I am saying is that if you have the exhaust parts replaced, you should have the power head pulled and the oil pan changed. While you are at it, it makes sense to also change the oil pump.
Your mechanic should be able to tell you what the cause of the louder motor noise is. Without hearing it, it's impossible to say what that might be.
