On the water impressions of my 228

I assume that "in your driveway" means you were running on a hose with muffs. In some cases, the motor will overheat with that combo. It depends on how much water flow gets through. I have also learned not to run on those coiled crinkly hoses that shrink when you turn off the water. They have a lot of water flow resistance
On Yami motors, the telltale (pee stream) can be a decent indication of water pressure and flow. Assuming it worked before, if it is weak or takes longer than maybe 45 seconds to pee when on muffs and the motor running, either you don't have enough water flow into the muffs or the water pump needs replacement
Seasick is dead on. Running with mugs on a hose can definitely set off the alarm. Pull the boat to a ramp and back it in. Or even find a large drum to run it in. You maybe wasting time and money.
 
So I got the boat back late yesterday from the upholstery shop. I put the bottom end with the new water pump kit back on the motor today but I don't want to run it in my driveway with the ears or in a barrel. So I'll run it up to the lake later this week. My question is when I put it in gear should the prop turn by hand? The T8 4 stroke kicker I bought a few days ago does not turn freely when I put it in gear? But my 2 stroke 225 ox66 turns freely. Thinking maybe I need to remove bottom end again? It went back together smooth.
 
when in gear either forward or reverse prop should not move, that is when the motor is not running. might have to help shift by rotating prop to move to get it in gear without motor running.
 
You messed up the alignment of the shift shaft. Either it is not inserted into the shaft sleeve or the LU and the control were in different positions ( gears). You need to drop the LU and confirm that the control and the lU are both in the same gear.

I guess I need to pull the bottom end off again, I jut checked again. When it it's gear the prop turns easy I can hear a little clicking in the lower unit. Kinda of like something is not quite making contact?? I'm not sure how I can put it back any differently?

like seasick said. shift shaft coupler might not be inserted or aligned properly.
 
loosen all bolts on the lower unit and drop it a few inches. you should see if the shift shaft is inserted into the coupler.

I'ts oval so you can tilt your engine down into it. There is also enough water pressure by volume that overheating isn't an issue. Ran my engine in it 45 mins, no problem. Ran my engine on ear muffs for 5 mins, problem.

Always better changing oil when its warmed up. And good to run 10 gallons of vinegar and small amount of Dawn or similar once a season to remove engine deposits.

I bought a rubber made garbage can but I have bend it in oval and it's questionable on the water covering the intake with all the splashing from the exhaust

My f225 would sound the alarm when running on the muffs. I changed my water pump once myself and decided it was worth the coin to have a pro do it.
 
I pulled it back off?? I'll put it back and just put a couple bolts in and make sure it shifts. The gear in front off the housing doesn't want to turn with my hand is that normal?
 
Are you talking about the shifter at the motor? Did you disconnect the shifter cable?

Sometimes on mine you have to rotate the prop to help it shift. Sounds normal if you are talking about the shift shaft. On the lower unit
 
I bet he is talking about shifter. Rotating the prop is absolutely correct. It lines up the clutch teeth and the gear teeth.

Yes the shift shaft on the lower unit,
 
Gotta grab the shaft with a pair of vise grips lightly half way up the shaft. Turn the prop and click the shaft left and right to check. When you reinstall, use long nose needle nose pliers to line up the Shift shaft. Be sure the cable detent is in neutral above and the unit is also in neutral.
 
That doesn’t turn easily by hand. You would need to grab it below the splines with a channel lock and shift it.
