Overnighter Rod Storage
Rod storage in the small cutting cabin of the overnighter can be a problem. To prevent rods from being damaged it’s a good idea to get them up and out of the way and not leave them on the cushions. Here is one solution to that problem. I decided to mount rod holders using three bolts which hold the Cutty cabin bulkhead wall to the sides of the boat.
Here is a photo of the rod holders I fashioned from 1/8” aluminum sheet 8” wide and bent into a 90 to hold the teak rod supports.

And here are the holders bolted into place. I removed the original washers to help compensate for the thickness of the aluminum. You will heed an assistant to thold the bolts head on the outside of the cabin as you remove the nuts on the inside. Same for tightening the bolts.

Next you will have to drill holes in the fabric bulkhead to allow the rods to be supported on their front ends. Use a sharp utility knife, cut an X pattern in the fabric and peal it back to reveal the plywood bulkhead. Tape the fabric out of the way as you cut the hole, be generous, 2” might be about right and when locating the hole; consider the cabin sides slope in sharply beyond the bulkhead. If you have long rods move over farther toward the centerline than I did.

Now use contact cement and apply glue to the plywood on both sides of the bulkhead where the fabric will contact it when you carefully stretch the fabric back in place thru the hole. Allow the glue to dry and place the fabic back in place thru the new hole.

Here the completed assembly with the rods in place.

Thanks, BCBryan.

Looks really nice Bryan. I converted the links for you and it took some figuring but it was a good challange doing it from this end. You have to find and click "copy image location". Then paste it into your post. Highlight what you just pasted and click "img". It will then show.
You did a first rate pro quality job. I had a thought for that hole through the fabric, what if you installed a large thru hull fitting there like this one?

You could even glue a pvc pipe with a cap over the thru hull to protect the rod tip on the other side of the bulkhead.
(edit) :hmm glue the pipe to a threaded end so it can be disassembled later if necessary.
Doing projects like this is really the fun and satisfying part isn't it?
Sometimes I wonder what is more fun, the challenge of the build or using the final product.
I'm going to give my boat a good looking at now and maybe do the same thing. I like the idea of a rod tip passageway as my overnighter's cabin isn't long enough to hang the 6-7' rods I use.
Again very nice work. :goodjob
Mike.
One final thought, you know having put this much of yourself into this boat and being as nice as it has come out you'll never be able to part with it!

Thanks Mike;
Yes another possibility for the hole would be the fitting they use for running computer wires thru a desk top. All my salmon rods are two piece, they break down, so they are about 5' long for storage, about 9-10 feet in use.
Cheers, BCBryan.

Ya a desktop opening is a great idea. It's bringing out the ratroder or MacGuyver in you.
The rods I prefer to use are one piece. We've seen the tip section fly off when casting and constantly twisting so its one piece now.
Again :goodjob

Another great idea. I like to get my extra rods out of the way when fishing but the 7'ers are too long for the cabin. Have to consider a mod like this now. Thanks for posting.
