Hi All, I am looking at a 1995 268 Islander with twin 150 hp Yami 2 strokes. Anyone have a set up like this or similar. What do you think about the power? I've heard mixed reviews from underpowered to overpowered. Thanks...

Not a direct comparison, but I'll provide some input anyway. :)

We purchased our 2002 Islander 270 new with a single 250HP OX66. Boat is rated at 500HP (more than the 268), and the 50% HP was marginal. We could cruise comfortably at 22-25kts, and top speed was just over 30knts, but the engine was working hard and fuel efficiency was poor. The other configuration in 2002 was twin F225s, but we purchased the boat show boat already rigged.

We repowered in late 2005 to twin F150s. We gained five knots on our 'comfortable' cruise speed, with 35-40% better fuel efficiency even at the higher speed. And top speed increased to just over 37kts. We now have over 1115hrs on the twins, with many trips 75nm offshore to the Norfolk Canyon area. With five persons, full fishing gear, full fuel and water, 250# of ice, etc, we generally get about 1.5nm/gal.

The 268 has a different configuration aft, with the bottom running surface ending further forward. This affects the HP rating, and the overall ride and performance a bit.

IMHO, a good pair of 150HP Yamaha 2-strokes is a good match for the boat. I would look into the fuel use if those are carbed engines, and determine if the boat's range with the burnable fuel carried will meet your needs. Our boat has a single 150gal tank, and the 1995 model 268 had a 134gal main tank - with a 71gal auxiliary tank as an option.

Contact me if you have any specific questions.

95 with twin HPDI 150's here too. Plenty of power. Great handling. Unless you are use to twin 200 or 225's on a boat this size, you will not be disappointed. tops out at 45 mph. (burning about 28 gph) Having the right props will make a difference.

While not as long, my '97 Gulfstream is equipped w/twin 150 2-strokes w/carbs. This is a heavy boat for a 23ft but with the counter rotating props, it has a GREAT hole shot and cruises well at 2400rpm about 28 MPH. Fuel usage could always be better, but 1.7 MPG and about 15 GPH isn't bad for this setup. I think the 150's on the Islander would be fine. Stay away from the single 250. I've heard too many other Grady owners say that they wish they had the twins. If there is any question about what the boat has for original equipment, then contact Grad-White white the serial number and they will let you know how the boat was shipped.

That must be a typo on the RPM, as you would need about 26" pitch props to do that speed at that RPM with the gear ratio on those engines.

George,

I have a 2001 islander with twin 150 Yamaha HPDI's. I have only owned it for one season, but have no complaints with the power selection thus far. the boat gets onto plane quickly and reaches my comfortable cruising speed of 30-32 mph at about 4100rpm. the boat is not the most fuel efficient thing on the water, but is any boat really fuel efficient? My fuel capacity is 150 main tank and 50 auxiliary tank.

Overall, I think you will be perfectly happy with that set up.

I have an 05 Islander 27 with twin f150. I have 150 main and 50 gal aux tanks. Great set up and range. I can load out with 3 to 4 for offshore diving or fishing runs. Weight does not really seem to matter much on performance. I get 14 to 16 GPH at cruise making 26 to 28 mph at 4500 rpms. Have been on overnight trips 95+ miles offshore and switch to aux tank when I am 15 miles out coming home.

thank you. I am drooling to find a 2000 or newer 268-270 and been looking for info on going 100 miles offshore with this boat and you just gave me the info. Thank you sir. Got my eye on one with a pair of 4strok 250's and liking the numbers Grady sent me. :goodjob
