Plexiglass gauge and switch cover needed?

Is the plexiglass flip up gauge and switch cover like below actually needed? I find it annoying and am thinking about removing mine. I would think that GW would use high-quality waterproof switches, but perhaps I'm mistaken. Most newer boats just have their gauges and switches mounted without any additional cover. I also trailer the boat and it's stored in a garage so I'm not as worried about it sitting out in the rain for a long time. I'm also planning on painting the faux wood grain black for a cleaner look. Yes, I stuck a 3" FM radio in there.

They're mostly so you don't spill your cocktail into your instrument panel when your get a strike. I suppose that in the right weather they could also play a role...

I removed mine, updated panel to Starboard for the gauges and new stereo.

Much cleaner look ;)
