What is everyone using on their Tournament 225's? I've seen alot of yami and johnson 225 but was wondering if anyone has tried 200 HP and if that was enough.

I have a 2008 225 w F250 TXR. I wouldn't want any less motor. It's a solid, heavy boat and with only one motor I'd go for the max. Very few people ever complain about too much HP, but on the other hand I've seen a lot of posts about wishing for the bigger motor.

Highly recommended not to go below the 225 hp. The other poster was correct, the Tournament 225 is a beefy fishing boat. In fact, the Tournament 225 gained more displacement over the past 10 years so 200 hp will not cut it. Please note that Grady is now pushing the F350 (a monster engine) on the 23 foot Gulf Stream in their showrooms, so you can expect the Tournament 225 to go up in hp soon, perhaps 275 or 300 hp especially if Grady incorporates an European transom.

What about an older 225, say a 1994 or 95 boat? Am I correct in thinking those boats weigh alittle less then the 225 of today?

Yes, you are correct. For the year you cite the displacement w/o engine is 3000 lbs. The Sea V2 hull was started by Grady in 1993 so you don't want to go further back than that date. The Yamaha 225 hp was the standard engine for the later 1990's model so don't go below that hp. The newer 225 Tournaments with a Yamaha 250 have a weight w/o Engine: 3450 lbs. Bottom line: stay with the manufacturer's recommended hp; they put a lot of engineering and testing into their numbers so stick with them. You won't be sorry.

tournament 225 power

If your thinking of the newer tournament models the F250 turns a bigger wheel than the F225. One thing I like about the larger engine and larger prop is when I'm putzing around about 1400 rpms I can get 7 MPH and 4.3 MPG with the trim up high. I typically cruise around 3500 to 3600 rpm and get about 3.5mpg. I would think that these are better numbers than you would get with the F225 on the later model tournament. Good luck with the search.
