Power for Islander 270

We are looking for an Islander. Is a single 250 adequate? I have seen both single and twin. Thanks for your input!
 
We purchased our 270 new in March 2002, with a single 250HP OX66. We put 465 hrs on it by Oct 2005, so we certainly used it a lot. I would consider the power barely adequate. Cruise was 22-24kts and WOT was 30.5kts. Fuel, and oil, consumption was a lot on the 2S.

We repowered to twin F150s in Oct 2005, and just hit 1100 hrs, so again a lot of use. Much better configuration for this boat, at least for how we use it. Cruise is 25-28kts, 30kts not too bad, and WOT is 36.5kts. Fuel consumption is much better - we just did a Norfolk Canyon trip with a 70nm run each way, plus trolling, for a total of 183nm, and burned 112gal.

I think twin Suzuki DF175s would be nice, and the new Yamaha 300HP single would likely be good. One of our TGWC members just repowered from a 250HP OX66 to the new Yamaha 300 and loves it.

Simple answer, a 250 is not enough power for that boat. I know of one 275 that was powered with a 250 and the owner changed it out after one year as it was not enough power. It may push you adequately in calm water but when it gets rough you will not be happy with the 250.
 
I had a 2003 Islander with twin 225's. It was awesome. 50 mph. Cruise at 33 MPH burning 2.2 mpg. No kidding. Comes up on plane like a big block corvette! The wieght in the boat did not matter. We made many Bahamas trips loaded down and she did not care! The most efficient GW due to the beam and weight in this size range. The double motor islanders come with the optional 50 gallon aux tank. 200 total. I would still have the boat but someone stole my motors! Ouch. Upgraded to a Marlin. More space more gas but great for my family! However I loved the Islander! Opt for the 225's!
 
Going off shore I prefer the redundancy of 2 motors even though it kinda doubles the cost.
