The survey is complete and I am within a few days of becoming the PROUD owner of a 1995 - 270 Grady White!! The boat is well equipped with the exception of a radar set. I am having the boat delivered to Tucson, AZ where I intend to prepare it for a trip to San Carlos MX. I want to have a good radar aboard but I know little about procuring one. I have had radar on a previous boat and know that it is very useful in poor visibility conditions. I need to know where to start looking and what kind of unit would best serve my needs. I have a good plotter and GPS unit and wonder if the radar can be networked with the plotter screen.

The GPS/Plotters are: one RaymarineL1260 and one Raymarine L770

Any suggestions appreciated.

for the money, you could get a Garmin 3210 with Radar, get HD 18 dome, $1099 for GPS and $1050 for dome and you get both. For Radar I like furunos.

I am looking at an old Raymarine brochure which includes the 10.4" color L1250 Plus and the 7" color L760 Plus. They came in two versions: fishfinder only and fishfinder with chartplotter built-in. The brochure says that both versions are hsb2 compatible, and may be linked to a stand-alone radar display for a dual station set-up, but will not display radar independently. I strongly suspect that the L1260 and L770 units you have are similarly limited.

give Jim at BOE a call or e-mail, hes very good with these types of questions and knows Raymarines well. he sells them at a good price.

CONGRATS on the boat.

Concur with Jim at BOE Marine. He will take care of you and won't steer you wrong.

BTW, the 1995 Islander was the 268, not the 270... A few significant differences.

Best of luck,

Brian

Personally I'd pass on the Garmin 3XXX series, it's 2 generations old and doesn't support NEMA 2K (the screen coatings may have issues too).

How much do you want to spend and do you want the RADAR to overlay on the plotter?

I am hoping to get a 48 mi closed array package for under 5$K I don't know anything about using a radar image over a plotter. Is this an important feature?

I don't find as useful as some do even though I have the feature. The reasons are many.

o adds visual clutter
o bouy sare often moved so the map doesn't match
o radar updates faster then chart when moving fast

I recommend Furuno for radar.

I would agree if budget is 5k. the only reason I say look at the 3210 is the deals that are out there now for it as well as radar.

Buy a stand alone Furuno radar and with the left over from the 5K you going to have a bunch of fill ups.
Ditto on BOE. Jim is THE best guy to deal with, great prices too.

Also, you will never see the difference between 36 and 48 mile radar on your boat, unless you mount it really high and i mean REALLY high.

Congrtas on your new Grady.

Welcome to the Grady boat form, how much experience do you have boating? They have a new low power Radar that I know nothing about, but for the money I’d check it out and see if that a better way to go. Let us all know what you find out. I have a cheap radar system (JRC) and it never let me down, work all the time great. But what is it that you need out of your radar? Stay out of the way of them big ships 50 miles offshore, a squeeze through a fogged in harbor with 200 boats everywhere, or a bird/ weather finding system that needs to find an ant floating on a log. You can spend a lot of money just make sure it what you need.
