Another day, another boat. 2001 Grady Sailfish 282 w/ 200 HPDIs and a tri axle trailer. 500hrs. Auto pilot. He is asking $49K. What should my offer be? $40K?
Check out these performance reports. Looks like the HPDIs preform within the same fuel burn and MPG as the 4 stroke F225. Not much difference.

I'd start in your range and see what happens....as far as performance numbers go, it looks to me like those HPDIs are a pretty nice setup on the Sailfish.

The Grady numbers in the link are different from the ones I have.
I have the original Grady website test numbers HPDI vs. F225s that show the HPDIs are champs in Sailfish fuel economy.

Drove 6hrs yesterday to look at a 272 2000 model with 07 F250s. The boats was in Mooresville NC on Lake Norman. The owner went on and on regarding the condition of the boat. He said"You won't believe the condition of this boat" "You have to come and see it." When I got there I was sorely disappointed. The boat had so many mis matched fiberglass patches it looked like a spotted dog. The motors had both lower units spray painted with silver spray paint that was not even close to a match. The transom had black roofing tar in the stress cracks. What a joke. The boat appeared to have been run aground. I wanted to choke his azz.

But anyways, what you need to do is to have a prospective seller take hi-res pictures of everything that you want to see; above and below decks. Everything. Even ask for a video tour of the boat. Detailed closeups of everything, including the warts. If he will not comply, move on. I have done this in the past, and it has saved me time and aggravation.

Assuming the 01 is in good condition, I would say that 49k is a really good price. I happen to think that 200 hpdis are the best 2 strokes ever made. You could offer 40k and if he meets you half way at 45 I think you will have a great boat with the right power at a huge savings compared to new. Two years ago when I was dabbling in the boat sales business I saw many 01 sailfish being offered in the 75 to 85k range. I know the economy is a different world now, but wow!

By the way, I don't know how you guys figure on what to offer, when you have not seen the boat condition nor know what it needs in restoration/repair/service.
Decided to go look at a Marlin last week and fell in love with the layout and cockpit room. Sea trialed it and liked the ride and handling. Could not agree on a price on that one. I did just put a 2002 Marlin under contract with a deposit pending sea trial, survey, and my inspectiuon. She has a tri axle trailer, gen set, auto pilot, 2002 Yamaha F225s with 600hrs. Looks clean in the photos. Going to close on her Thursday if everything checks out. 
Would be interested in real world performance numbers with the F225s on the Marlin. I think the numbers on the Grady site are a little generous.

I think the numbers on the Grady site are a little generous.Well if they are a little generous regarding a 24 knot cruise at 4k rpm on the Marlin- that boat is 2 knots slower thn my 282 with the worst engines yama makes- F200s- my boat is a white elephant per you yet for $2000 the f200s are 225s and it will cruise at 28 knots.

from what I have heard from more then one owner of the 300 Marlins with f225 you will burn 1 gal per mile to 1.2 miles. I have only heard one person tell me he got better then that at 1 gal per 1.4 miles. Let me know what you end up getting, the 300 is a great boat its a heavy boat and wide. I wish you the best with the new boat. Have fun and enjoy her.
The one I sea trialed with 250 OX 66 engines cruised at 1.0MPG on the fuel management with 4 guys and 1/2 tank of fuel. I was hoping to get 1.4 but with the F225s that may not happen.
The search is over. I am the proud new owner of a 2002 Marlin. This boat is amazing. I can't say enough abut the design and ride of this work of art. pics to come.
