Replacing ALL the brass scupper thru-hulls @ the transom

Not too long ago I had to replace the brass (or bronze?) thru-hull's that are for the 4 scupper drains at the transom because they were corroded and paper thin. I had to rent a tool to "SQUISH" them down to make the flange for them to fit properly. Kind of a pain and very messy with "LIFE-CAULK" all over the place. Well now I noticed that ALREADY they are "TOAST" and need replacement again ! Now I even have to do the bilge drain too !
First off is there an easier / better /proper way to do these ?
And shouldn't they last MUCH longer then this ? Is there a better quality fittings I should be using ?
I also wonder if taking the scuppers off in the winter-time would be a good idea ? They always seem to clog with debris in the winter and let water SIT in the scuppers.

Wow, those parts should last a lifetime I would think. Sounds to me like you have more going on than simple corrosion, perhaps some type of electrolysis. Are your scuppers partially under water when the boat is in? What kind of shape are your zincs in? If your zincs are gone brass is next in line. I am sure you can measure for stray current but that will need to come from someone smarter than I.

I have nothing to offer on a better way to replace them, sorry.

Your talking about well drains correct? PVC can be used here as well as garboard drain but epoxy it in properly and it will last forever.
