Just bought a 2000 Sailfish 282 with Twin Yamaha 200 2 strokes and want to repower with 200 or 250 hp 4 strokes. Any recommendations?

Hi Edw, I have the same boat, 2001. with the same motors. Let me know what you do. The biggest concern is weight and keeping the scupper plugs above the waterline. Some guys modify the scupper plug area to accommodate a larger motor

2002 282 with yami F225’s re-powered with ZuKE DF300s this past January.
For Suzuki, the DF250’s and DF300’s are same motor except the tune.
Cant remember the exact number but the 300’s were only Cdn$1600 more total over the 250’s, so i opted for the 300’s.
was worried a bit about going from 2x225 to 2x300 (adding 150 hp!) and adding about 140# more weight off the transom, but really wasnt an issue after all said and done.
virtually no noticeable water line difference going from 225s to the heavier 300s.
big difference in boat handling; acceleration is incredible (was fine before but after re-power it can really throw you back should you want); plane on one engine even loaded; faster cruise by 1-2 knots; much higher top end; unfortunately not much fuel savings as boat at the faster cruise burned 16.5-18 gph @ 3800-4000 rpm doing 27-28 knots loaded. I think the 225’s did 16-17 gph @ 3900-4000 doing 26.5-27 knots loaded.
IMO, if you want to save $1500 go with 250’s. If you have a penchant for some silly acceleration and speed go with 300’s.
I ended up selling the boat soon after re-power but did enjoy the boat for a short while with the 300’s.
Suzuki makes a good motor and i really liked the digital controls, sync and troll mode.
you might consider Mercury v8 300’s as an option as i‘ve heard very good things, but i chose zuke as that’s who services my boating area and I’ve had very good experienes with them over the years.
IMO, i would not put 4 cyl 200’s on a 282 as i doubt they punch enough torque.
Not against yami F300’s either if a good dealer is near by.

Great to about the 300’s, I placed the order last week and they were by far much lower cost than and other motor of similar class, the price difference was like 1000 USD , I can not wait to feel the difference

As stated the weight along with total HP are the things to manage. I had F225s on a 2002 and the scuppers were close. Maybe look into the Suzuki outboards. They tend to be lighter as well as cheaper.
