Repower Question

Recently purchased a 1998 272 Sailfish with twin OX66 225 efi.

thinking of selling the 66's and repowering with twin Yayama 250 (2008-2012) not fly by wire so I can use my controls and harnesses since I have a 2nd station.

Has anyone repowered a similar boat and could you let me know what you have experienced with fuel economy by doing so.

Max hp is 450. I have this hull which had been repowered with f225 yamahas but I just repowered her with a pair of f200 i4's. Would have loved a pair of the f250's but that poses an issue with over powering & insurance issues.

I repowered my 265 Express this spring with a pair of 2015 F250s, new gauges but used the existing rigging as the 3.3L engines are backwards compatible with the manual stuff from the original F225s (manufactured November 2004 and victims of the dry exhaust corrosion issue) as well as being fly by wire capable. You give up some of the capability such as the push button RPM control for trolling speed adjustment but otherwise the old rigging worked fine. Don't have a second station so not sure about your exact setup but worth asking if you're interested in going new.

Best numbers so far have been 25-26mph at around 3800 RPM which was giving me 2.0mpg on the meter. I'm running the factory original props off my old 225s, believe they're 15 1/4 x 19s. Top end stayed predictably similar but the power curve on the new engines gets that boat out of the water and on plane much quicker and they hold speed better as we pound into chop. One offshore trip (3 guys, 250 gallons of gas, water, ice, etc.) of a bit over 250 miles with about a 60 mile run out and a 90 mile run back at the end of the day (at around 30 knots most of the way) and I averaged out at 1.5mpg.

What kind of number are you seeing with the 200's
?

Sorry for the late response, these numbers based on motors mounted on hole 2 & end of season. I plan to raise motors one notch & strip bottom paint this year. My numbers are as follows, 3500 rpm 11gph, 22-23mph-just above planing speed. 4000 rpms 15gph 29mph, 4500 rpms 19.5gph 33mph, wot 5600-5700 trimmed out 39 gph 42.5mph. Again rough numbers, motors having just under 20 hrs on them still in break in stage. I am getting same overall performance as compared to the f225 4s v6. The hull rides superior as the stern is higher on plane.

My issue is I have a tuna tower with full steering stating that adds quite a bit of weight to the boat.

It would probably be worthwhile to run new shift and throttle cables if they have been around for 15-16 seasons.

Do you know the weight of your boat loaded?
Does it have bottom paint?
How does the power coming up on plane or holding plane at slower speeds compare to the F225s?
Is the '98 hull the extended version?
What props are you turning?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm also looking at options for my 2005 282. Fuel economy at lower cruising speeds while packing heavy loads is my objective.

dry weight hull only 5500 no engines per grady specs, the 98 hull is the full hull under transom. I have a lot of gear on board full canvas up. The props are reliance 17" sds. Honestly the jump up on plane between the f225 & new f200's are minimal. I had a lot of questions & concerns also about this repower but I was able to take a test ride on a fellow gradys 2001 sailfish in which he repowered hpdi 200's to the F200's and he raved about the performance. The test ride confirmed it for me. When I get back in the water for the 2016 season I would be glad to take you on a test ride. Any particular questions pm me.

Also, my bottom paint was 10 seasons worth of built up ablative in which I plan to strip this season-hull was kinda rough underneath. The holding plane rpms with the f200's is 3300-3400 which gets me 20-22 mph which is planning for this hull. the f22s's with 17m props was very similar rpms. Again I only put 20 hours on them & I am still learning the performance curve of the repower

Papa Joe you will see 2.0-2.2 mpg running 29mph@3800rpm, I did go with 250's after talking with grady. No problems with the weight of the 250's oil tank gone, scuppers above the water line when full. I have run this set up for 5 yrs with no problems. Wot@6k is 49-50 mph with 3 blade 15x21pitch. Hope this helps
