Hiya all-- I've recently purchased a Voyager 248 (1998) with a 2015 Honda 225 (600 hrs). I've got it in the yard, but unfortunately it looks like a repower is in my future. I'm thinking twin 150 mercs but was wondering if anyone had recently repowered a Voyager or similar. Im a total noob to the forum, so apologies if I'm in the wrong place or there is an active thread already!! Thanks for reading :)

We have the same boat, are kicking around the idea of a repower, but haven't. Ours has a single, but doesn't have a hard top. As it is, I dont care for the running angle of the boat with 2 adults in the aft seat, but forward ballast has helped. I know the boat was designed for twins, and I too have wondered about twin 150 mercs. I had hoped with the right props the boat wouldn't squat too badly under way.
Someone on here either has or should have experience with one of these with original twins and the short running surface. Keep us posted!
 
Copy that, will do! I've got a hard top and have found it slow to a plane and sitting way back on the honda 225. I think it is underpowered, but I'm not sure whether my performance was affected by the (still undiagnosed) issue that landed me in the yard. What are you running now?
 
225 ox66. No power issues until I have a full tank, and 6-7 people on board. I can still get on plane, but it is slower. 2 people and 1/3 tank of fuel I can hit 44 mph GPS verified.
Considering the displacement, I'm surprised your Honda isn't enough, unless you are loaded heavily regularly.
 
Thanks! I've got dual fuel tanks and the hard top and was having a hard time getting on a plane even with two people and about 100 gallons of fuel. I wasn't able to get above 3200-3300 rpm either. The engine developed a very serious knock, so the issues might be related to the motor rather than the displacement. I'll let you know as I move forward.... Repowering is brutally expensive so I hope there is a fix for my Honda. If not, I'll let you know how sniffing around the mercs and Yamahas go. I have another boat, a 20' carolina skiff with a 115 HP Evinrude e-tec (2 stroke) which I also like as an engine. (And yes, having two boats is a particularly ridiculous form of insanity)

If you can put twin 150s on the Gulf, I think you can do the same on that hull.

Looks like something is out of whack from what you describe. A 3.5 litre should be able to do better.
 
I’ve got a 96 Voyager with an 02 BF225. When I’m not battling ethanol fuel issues (a story for another thread), she tops out at 42 @6000 RPM. Trim tabs out of the hole make planing much easier- the boat is very tab responsive. I have the hardtop also- it’s a great rig but twins would only enhance that In my opinion. Thats the newer version of my boat. Just did a single 300 Zuke. When I get the prop dialed in I'll be in the high 40's. I'm hitting 46 at 5400 RpMs.
