repowering a 1983 grady 255 sailfish with a 300 hp suzuki ou

anyone tell me if the 300 hp suzuki outboard motor is a good motor for this boat..i only travel about 30 miles a hour..and i dont travel far for the dock .... 30 to 45 minute thanks for the information .....had a pair of 175 hp johson ....dont want to go back to twin

Since you have over 700 lbs. of engines, the 600 lb. Suzuki 300 should be no problem. You must have at least 25 inches of transom height to mount the 300...plus the expense of rigging, etc. Suzuki outboards are highly rated, the only problem sometimes reported is availability of parts and technicians trained on them.

what year were the 175's you had on the back? I had a set of late 80's Johnson 175's on the back of my 255 sailfish and changed over to a single 300 E-Tec. I love the new configuration and the single engine has more than enough power to get the boat on a plane quickly. I do not have to use trim tabs to get the boat up on a plane or mash the throttle. top speed is about 38mph and optimal cruise "so far" is around 2 mpg at 22-25 mph. I haven't had a chance to mess with props yet.
