I have twin 1994 175 hp mercury black max both run great but after replacing the water pump and stats . the starbord is running fine, the port warms up like the starboard but then the port side goes cold . I crossed gages and no difference switched stats no change I can put my hand on the head and its cool the starboard too warm to keep hand on.Good water flow from the pisser whats going on . could the poppet valve be stuck open and cause it to run cold ?

Sounds like a stuck thermostat(s). I had the same problem on one of my Suzukis. It was running cold and I found some indications of water in the oil. Changed the thermostats and the problem wnt away.

He switched stats so that can't be the problem. I believe the Mercs have a PRV (pressure relief valve). I bet this is stuck open. Everyone forgets to change these.

Yep, poppet valve is the same thing. You can tell by checking the relief holes on the upper part of leg. If water is coming out at idle it's stuck open.
