Have a brand new Standard Horizon GX1850. Built into the helm. Have constant condensation on the screen. Gets worse when the unit warms up.
Anything I can do?
Or do I need to send it back?
Thanks

Yes, you have to send it back, but call seller or SH before and discuss that.
Marine devices are usually nitrogen filled before final assembling as nitrogen comes dry and that avoid condensation inside if device warms up and cools down.
Obviously your 1850 has a leak where nitrogen leaked out (if it they are filled) and humidity entered and is must be replaced.

Spoke to SH. Apparently these unit are no longer sealed (cost saving?) and this has become a very common problem.

Oh wow, that sucks!

And what did they suggested about your problem? Just live with that?
The humidity inside the VHF will do no good to the electronics, so i would not accept that.

Chris

SH suggest either removing the unit and openning it and putting dessicant paks inside or sending back to them to remove the moisture (???). They said it will probably happen again but maybe not as much.
Terrible they have this issue!
Screen is unreadable!

Thats is definitively very uncool!
The dessicant packets should work, but you probably loose the warranty on the brand new unit if you open it.
What about the dealer/shop you bought it? I personally would not accept that.

Certified Installer wants to charge me to send it back and re-install.
Or sell me a Raymarine vhf which apparently doesn't have this problem.

Wow!
Honestly i would change VHF and installer!
My boat has a Raymarine VHF and i guess it's original installed and it's not in a protected position.
However i am not a fan of Raymarine, don't like the position and the small screen so i probably relocate a new one up in the electronics box.
As i have all Garmin electronics it will be probably be the Garmin VHF 215 AIS to show AIS targets on my chartplotters and the Garmin has a big display what will work nice up there.
If your dash is exposed then you may opt for a VHF blackbox to install inside and just the mic with controls is on the dash.

It's really not right of Standard Horizon!
What do you think of the Ray53 vhf?

I don't know much details about Raymarine devices, saw some depth sounders i don't like.
The one below is the one i have installed but no idea what model it is, but it works but i have no idea how well as it came with the boat.
However, from what i know they are well built devices and are afaik have a bigger market in professional applications.
I would buy one who fit the hole you already have as i don't think that there is a huge difference between different brands.

The Ray53 may be the newer model of the one installed on my Canyon and it's different.
However i think it's a good unit but screen is small with small letters, difficult to read if not in front.
