Canyon 271
Hi there. I have a new Canyon 271, delivered in June of 2024. Weird thing happened. I pulled out of my slip and my props were fine but then the steering failed. There was no friction on the wheel at all and it didn’t turn the props. I nearly hit another boat floating around but using the props my buddies were able to grab other boats and poles and get it back into my slip. My marina techs say the battery was low which makes no sense, as the batteries were strong enough to start the boat with all electronics and why would the steering not work if the battery was low? The techs at my marina are blaming it on a low battery but that makes zero sense. Any thoughts???

You haven't said if you have the electric steering or hydraulic steering. You need to inform the group what brand motors and what model motors to get some relevant responses.

There is a problem you shouldn't be having. Talk again to the dealer. If the batteries started the motors and were running when you lost steering they would be charging the batteries. There is no way that you should have that problem, unless the steering is connected to a house battery that is not being charged. I would also call Grady. Your boat is under warranty and it has a potential threat to your safety at sea . I would also not use the boat until the issue is resolved to yours and Grady's satisfaction.

Thank you so much. I called Grady and my dealer and they confirmed this should not have happened and they will inspect it and figure out what’s wrong. They said it could be a wiring issue. In any event, very much appreciate your reply, thank you.

Thanks. Am new to this forum, appreciate the tip. The steering is electronic. They are Yamaha 300 hp, with the Yamaha shifter set up with a joystick. Thanks again.

The steering is electronic.
Yeah, that's what i guessed and one first hand experience more to not buy any brand outboard with electronic steering.
Unfortunately there are a lot of Helm Master users having failures (also offshore) and needed to be towed back,
and thats exactly what i don't want to experience.
Loosing engine control/s is already a nasty situation but with a bit of knowledge manageable, but loosing steering and engine control is worst case scenario.

However, i feel sorry for your troubles and as it's a brand new boat you have to go back to dealership to have this fixed. Don't touch anything by anything other than a certified Yamaha Tech to avoid discussions regarding warranty.

Chris

Keep us up to date on the issue. I would like to know what the problem is and hopefully was.
