Going to install a stereo on my 228 and wonder where the best location is for stereo and speakers? I'm assuming the stereo will just go in the radio box, but what about the speakers? Flush mount? Where? Box speakers? Where? Thanks....

Here are some pics of the setup on my 226:

JBL MR-3 in an enclosure in the upper electronics box. Mounted the ICOM to the top of the enclosure, and the Sirius dock next to it.

For speakers, I didn't want to cut any holes, so I went with the Poly-Planar MA800 mounted on the hardtop. They sound great, and with them right behind your head, you can hear them over the wind noise when you are running.

I flush mounted speakers in the seat pedestals, facing the ransom. My 226 has tackle boxes under each seat. I took out the tackle draws to gain easy access, mounted the speakers flush to the back wall - facing aft. very easy wiring them up top the radio box.

On my previous boat, I installed a pair of rectangular speakers/boxes under the gunnels, facing down toward the deck. No holes to cut, speakers and all wiring totally concealed, and they sounded awesome. They were just the right size to fit there, with almost no room to spare. Found them in Sams Club, but that was many years ago. For all I know, they may still be on there (gw204's Sailfish), working good as ever.

My setup is similar to Parthery's except that I added two round speakers where the inspection ports are next to the fish boxes (bought replacement inspection covers and used them as mounts in case I ever want to remove the speakers and go back to the stock look).

RADIO

I mounted my Clarion in the cuddy to port to the headliner w/ a remote on the dash. I mounted 2 3" speakers on the dash tucked down towards the windshield and 2 6" box speakers under the gunwale to aft. Great all around sound.
