Sticker Removal

I am in the process of remove the name stickers from the sides of my 204 using a hair dryer. 5 in yellow lettering, The stickers come off when heated but it is leaving behind the glue. What do I use to remove it? The guy at west marine told me to use easy off oven cleaner??. yea, ok I might try that. not.

Any other suggestions, I was going to use acetone but another person told me it would just smear the glue all over the place. Right now I have removed one letter and there is glue where the sticker used to be.

Acetone, W-D 40 , Goo-Gone, These will all work. Stay away from Laquer thinner as it leaves a residue. Also the best way to remove the stickers is with a razor blade and patience. Trust me I know :D
 
Removing Adhesive

General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner from 3M Marine, Part Number 08984. Available at Defender Industries (defender.com) for $16 and change. It's pretty potent, it even removes wet 5200. Michael Jackson used too much of it, and look what happened to him. Vapors are pretty intense. Seriously, the stuff is a great cleaner. We just re-caulked our shower with fast cure 5200 and it got rid of the excess with ease. It's made for marine applications and weathered adhesives.

I noticed you're from LBI - I bet that big marine supply place in Point Pleasant has it. I don't know the name of it, but it's on the right as you come into PP from the north just after you come off the bridge.
 
Acetone is very good for removing/cleanning stickers and pretty much available everywhere. The 3M product is even better but more expencive and harder to get.

Tried using a razor and man those things are on there. Absolutly have to heat them up till there almost goo again. But then they just pull right off. but the glue backing stays :x . I will try acetone and wd40 as that is the cheap alternative I guess. As far a s patience goes, where do you get that from?, Maybe I'll find it in the bottom of a cold bud, with some Bob Marley in the background. Nice way to spend a Sunny Sat out of the water. lol
 
Actually, the EZ Off works pretty well. Spray it on...use a dull razor blade to start the pull and pull them off. Finish with a good rinse of soap and water, then compound and wax to reduce the "ghosting" effect.

Used the acetone, worked out well. but hard to cover the ghosting. tried compounding, waxing, ect but still had a darker shade where the letters were. Oh well , Maybe let the sun try to bleach it out.

The absolute best product for sticker removal is an eraser wheel. You can pick them up at any automotive body parts/paint supplier. They chuck up into a drill and erase the sticker and residue off. They don't scratch and take a fraction of the time. Using adhesive remover, hair dryers, and razor blades is time consuming and very aggravating. The wheel will be the best 18 dollars you ever spent.

Good thing you told me now, Cuz I still have one side left to do tomorrow. The other side took 3.5 hours. Drank allot of beer that day. I will check it out, Thanks.
 
sticker application

Are you planning to install your new stickers ? I just bought new stickers and I am debating on whether or not to do it myself.

Anyone ever do it ? I have a 19 ft tournament so its the stripe doen the side and logo. I can see where the old ones were located. I guess you just need a steady hand

I will be renaming the boat but putting the stickers on the sides of the walkaround. They were on the sides under the GW logo, the last owner must have put them on in the water during a hurricane leaning over the side cuz they were crooked as hell.

Best I've ever used. Not cheap but instant. Time is $.
 
Any sticker or decal is much easier to apply if you take a spray bottle filled with water, and put 6 or 8 drops of Ivory soap, or Tide liquid detergent, and wet down the area where you want to put the decal. This will allow you to move it around a bit. Take a squeege and squeeze out the water when you get it where you want it. I watched the graphics guy who did my trucks lettering do this, then gave me a bill for about $60 per hour for a 15 min job. Its pretty easy, even with a large decal.

Scouter. I've heard using Ivory soap to help place decals but does this work for stickers as well? The Grady Striping comes with an adhesive backing, does it still adhere when the striping drys ?
 
I`m glad you asked that. I would like to know as I was planning on applying my stickers this weekend.

I would surely try the soap if we can confirm it works with stickers.

Another tip on putting on new stickers is to use a couple of pieces of masking tape to make a hinge. Get the sticker lined up before you remove the backing. Tape one side to the hull and then fold the sticker over and remove the backing. Then use your windex/water and squegee the sticker to get the air bubbles out as mentioned before.

Yes, it works for stickers, decals and anything with glue behind it.
 
I have a 208 Adventure. I replaced the GW Logo stickers without any problems. I ordered 40 ft. of striping to do both sides of the boat. It was actually going pretty easy on the relatively staight part of the striping but once I got into the bend I started running into all kinds of problems. I got air pockets, wrinkles I couldn't flatten out.
This was in March, the temp. was about 45 degrees, but not being known for my patience I couldn't wait for it to warm up. My boat mechanic said I should have waited for it to warm up at least into the 60's, then lay the striping out in the sun, uncoiled, until it got soft and pliable. This makes it a lot easier to make that bend without wrinkles.
Applying the striping isn't that difficult if you just keep the working footage short. Just keep a few inches of striping off the backing as you're working your way down the side. Cut the backing away after every few feet so it isn't hanging down getting in your way.
Oh yeah, I put a pencil mark evey couple of feet before I removed the old striping to give me a pattern to follow.

Where did you get you srtipings, I am looking for Navy Blue, found the logo on ebay.

Do you have the part number of the striping. I have the Grady Chart with all the diiferent striping patterns and part numbers.
