I have a 1988 19' Tournament and want to restore the wood trim. I know how to restore teak wood trim. My question is whether I should remove the trim and do the work or keep it installed given its age (21 years).

The trim appears to be installed with screws that mount through the fiberglass (near the rod holders) and attach to a thin wood strip on the reverse side of the fiberglass held on by some type of foam/styrofoam material. It almost looks like the foam installation they have been using on homes after it dries.

My concern is that if I remove the screws there will be nothing for them to "grab" onto when I go to replace the restored teak trim.

It would be my preference to remove the wood so I do not get the chemical on the fiberglass or gel coat and can do a better job but I do not want to do so if there will be a problem replacing it. Has anyone done this repair and encountered this issue. Thank you.

I removed all the trim on my 89 Overnighter. It was all mounted with screws and I had no problems reinstalling it. I'm not familiar with your boat (or other Gradys for that matter) but I doubt there's much difference in the way the trim is mounted. In many (if not most) places, the screws just went into the fiberglass; there was no backing at all. Just be careful you don't strip out the screw holes when you reinstall.
