Throttle/shifter control hard to push on a 1991 Overnighter

I have a 1991 Overnighter with a Yamaha 175 outboard. The throttle/shifter control is hard to push, so I loosened the friction control screw but it is still hard to push/pull back the throttle/shifter control. I don't think the cable is kinked anywhere.

Can the cable be lubed? Any other suggestions?
 
Welcome! You may have some corrosion or binding on the shift linkage on the engine the cable is trying to drive.
Did you try to shift w/o the cable connected ?
Then also see how the cable moves with it disconnected (shift cable) from the engine, same for throttle cable.

Isolate the binnacle, and if it's the cable one or two, replace the cable.
I don't recommend servicing the cable with lubricant.
 
Yep... Check the throttle bodies.

I just had the same issue on a Johnson 130 and found that the port side throttle bodies were corroded and have to be replaced.

I disconnected the port side linkage and she moved very easily.
