time to plane

Just wondering guys if any of you have timed your "time to plane" in seconds. Don't really know if there is a formula or a time suggested to restrict compromising the outboard. If one reaches appropriate WOT does that automatically make the time to plane appropriate for that boat and outboard? Cheers trapper :hmm
 
If you can get your RPM's near the top-end of the specs (with your normal/typical load), then you're good - everything else will fall in line appropriately. Trying to put an objective measure (stopwatch) on a subjective and very variable concept is hard to do. It's especially hard to do if you want to then try and compare it others since that brings in a whole 'nother set of variables.
 
I would think if the boat planes properly the thought of timing it wouldn't come to mind.
When I was in the market for a Grady I went for a test ride on an '89 Overnighter with a 175 Johnson 2 stroke. We motored out and then the owner throttled up and it struggled to get on plane. Why? A wet heavy transom? Marine growth? I don't know but there was a problem there. Then I tested the boat I have now. Throttle up and it was instantly on plane or quick enough that it was not an issue. The only time I'd consider timing its time to plane is if it was struggling, having an issue.
