towing my boat

I am in Massachusetts and trailer my Gulfstream short distances a few times a season. I understand that any boat that has a beam over 8"4" needs somekind of special permit. Can anyone give me some info on this, how I get it, where, cost etc.

8'6" is the actual limit (102 inches). If your boat exceeds that you can get permit information here http://www.mhd.state.ma.us/default.asp? ... sid=level2

Remember, you must measure at the widest part of the boat.

In many states you can only tow oversize during daylight hours and not on Sunday. I've seen many oversize boats being towed by my marina and I highly doubt any of them had permits. Unless you get into an accident I doubt they are going to care or even notice. If you're going a long distance or across state borders I'd get the permit.

The issue isn't gov, its your insurance co. If you don't have the permit ins may not cover you regardless of fault.
