Not sure if this is the place to ask this but didn't know where else to go. Bought my first Grady (1995 208 Adventure) and need to adjust my tow vehicle to accept a trailer coupling with 5 pins for brakes. My vehicle (Toyota) has a four pin adapter but is not set up for brakes.

Anyone know what I need to do to get it ready to tow? Someone told told me something about a break assist unit but I have no clue.

Thanks

Probably just need to take a line from your back up lites to the 5th pin for the solenoid so brakes don't apply when in reverse.

You trailer may have a manual overide also which will prevent the brakes from working when backing up.

Assuming your talking about surge brakes here correct?

If so, then yes, as seasick mentioned, you might find a hook of some sort that you can slide a small bolt thru thus disableing the brakes.

Understand this is not intended for use while on the road.

thanks

Thanks. Just found out my adapter on the car is 7 pin and the trailer is 5 pin flat. Toyota only had a four pin flat adapter but I found a five at auto parts store. Brakes are surge.

Thought I would have to get a brake controller but don't think I do.

You can also put a 2x4 flat between the hitch end of the coupler and the moving part in an emergency.
