Transducer "flat" on 285 - to use or not to use?

I'm rigging electronics on a new Freedom 285, and have seen mixed messages on using the "flats" on the hull that are designed for transducer installation. I'm planning on a flush mount thru hull (no fairing block), and using the flat would be the simplest, but I have read of turbulence issues? Can anyone report success or failure installing a transducer on the flats? It's the location that Grady officially recommends. If the flats are NOT the best location, then where is a better spot?
