Transom Repair - South Jersey

Has anyone had their transom repaired and/or replaced in southern New Jersey? Now that I have my boat out of the water and can get a good look at it, I am feeling a little concerned about the condition of it..I can stand on the cavitation plate and bounce up and down with no real movement, but it looks kind of bad and if I need to address it, I would rather do it sooner than later..

There is a guy that goes by the name JAWS on www.thehulltruth.com.
He has done many of them (according the posts I've read, never seen his work). I know he is in NJ, not sure where.

You definitely need transom work there, looks like delamination problem and/or water got into the transom and froze.
JAWS A.K.A Jimmy does a great job, but you really have to go along with what he says. He knows his stuff but he always has to be correct. His business name is Jimmys Marine.
 
When I pointed it out to the former owner when I looked at the boat, he seemed to have little understanding of what was going on and how bad leaving cracks like that un-sealed on the transom cap and letting water into it really was. I liked the boat and pretty much just paid for the engines when I bought it. I have seen Jimmy's Marine Service on the Shamrock Owner's Website and the owners of my company are sort of like that..so I am used to dealing with them..one day I will be able to tell them that "you might be the smartest person in the room, but you dont know everything...".
 
Hi Chris - I would recommend Young's Fiberglass in Marmora, NJ - 609-390-1628. They have a booth at the Atlantic City boat show -if you are going there today. Marmora is just inland from Ocean City. They did an excellent job repairing a previous boat of mine. Good Luck - John - shoretogo

Wanted to mention them, but is a hike from south Jersey to here.
 
Thanks for the info guys...I have reached out to Raybo, who I know from the Mako Owner's website..he did work on a buddy of mine's Mako...and I have gotten a bunch of recommendations for Youngs and I met with Dan Young at the boat show today...not knowing that he was going to be there..I came across his booth and we talked about it..she may end up there next month..I have to make arrangements to have the engines yanked and the transom cleaned off (tabs, etc.)....the dealer that just worked on the engines was also there and I talked to them about it as well....they do not do repairs but offered their services to remove the engines....should have everything settled by the end of the week as I want it dealt with now before fishing season gets here...
 
For a local guy get a hold of Jimmy, the job will be done right. You were already warned of his mouth and it doesn't seem to bother you. I've seen pics of Raybo's work and holly ____! Go to classicmako.com and look up "fans of black paint", wow but he is on Long Island. If all you want is a transom (and hopefully that's all), either one will work but if you wanted a custom paint job go to Raybo.
 
Hello Gents....after a few weeks of talking to different guys, I have selected a guy to fix the boat. His company is called Marine Specialtists and is located only a few miles away at the Chestnut Neck Boatyard in Port Republic near the Garden State Parkway Bridge. He came recommended by the dealer that serviced the engines and who is going to remove them, move the boat and reinstall the engines. I stopped by his shop last weekend to check out his operation and see if he was a slob or not and I was pleased with what I saw. He even had a 25 Aquasport in the shop with it's transom cut open. It was a neighbor's boat of one of my buddies....he gave me a good price, comparable to the other's that I spoke with. One benefit is that he is NOT using any wood. The boat is going in the shop on March 1st and should be out in 2 weeks with a new lease on life...

I wish you the best, sounds like you found a good person to do the work. I hope you can take a lot of before and after pictures and post them. :goodjob
 
like to see some pics after all done mine getting soft on 192 aventurer will have to do it soon
 
I plan to take pics and ask Scott to do the same. I told him that I will help promote his bussiness by helping feed our desire for pictures...plus he is close to the house and I can stop in there from time to time and check on his progress....or send the wife over with the camera..I took her with me when I checked out his shop, so she knows where it is.

The boat has gone to the shop yesterday. The dealer picked her up last Thursday and pulled the engines and hauled her over to the fiberglass guy for the replacement. He is removing the tabs, swim step and the rings from the transom and will have her cut open by the end of the week. He is going to take pictures for me..I am going to go and see her on Saturday and check on the progress and will post pictures. I chose to go with Scott of Marine Specialists over in Port Republic at the Chestnut Neck Boatyard. His price was comparable to Youngs Fiberglass but he is not using any wood..he is using penske board and pourable materials.....I hope to have her back in a few weeks all put back together and better than new...

Can't speak in terms of actual dollar figures, but I can tell you it will depend on how the job is done and what materials are used. Going from the outside, using wood and polyester resin will be the cheapest. Doing it from the inside, using composite core such as Coosa and laminating with epoxy will be the most expensive.
 
I got prices ranging from $3500 to $6500 for different methods and from guys with different degrees of establishment...obviously the lowest price was from a guy doing it in his driveway after work and I had to send him a bare boat..the higher prices were from established repair/restoration bussinesses and also included derigging the boat and putting everything back on..I went with a hybrid...an established bussiness inside of a building (weather not a factor) and he is removing/reinstalling everything except the engines, which I had the dealer remove after he came and picked up the boat. The dealer also took the boat over to Scott and will pick it up from him when it is done. Depending on how much the dealer whacks me, my cost is going to be between $5500 and $6K total. The Gulfstream is a lot wider than a 209...the fatter boat will cost more...
 
I stopped by the shop of Marine Specialists yesterday and checked on my baby....I was not happy that he was not farther along, but at least it is in the shop and he covered it with plastic....it looks so different w/o the engines....I took some pics of the 25 Aquasport that he has cot open in the same manner as he will mine....

Re: Transom Repair - Update 2

Stopped by the fiberglass guy this morning to check on progress......He has the trim tabs, swim step and eye's off the boat and the transom cut out..he has 2/3 of the soaked wood dug out....the wood was all wet but not too much of it was rotten. The brass drain tubes were all shot and leaking water into the core. The screws on the trim tabs were corroded away and probably half their original size and were letting water into the core...all things to check for you other guys.....here are some pics...

Here is a picture of what the finished core is going to look like..2 layers of foam board, several layers of fiberglass and the middle filled with nida core...

He should be done next weekend and I should have my baby back before the end of the month...
