I just ordered a new 2015 283 Canyon with twin 300 and noticed after the fact that the trim tabs that have been recessed in the hull for ever are bolted to the ouside of the transon like a west marine add on. I have not been able to find out why the change except maybe cost but I am concerned about the ride, spray and ease of damaging them extending straight out from transom. Any information from current owners that may have this set up or info as to why it was changed would be appreciated.

I can't answer the part of your question about why they are where they are. But many, many manufacturers have them bolted onto the transom. Sea Ray, for one, does it that way with 99% of their boats and have been doing it that way for decades. Like Grady, Sea Ray is a premium line and I'm sure if there were ongoing issues, it would have been changed. I've (and family) owned (and still own some of those original ones) countless boats over the last 4 or 5 decades and the only style of trim tabs any of them have had are the ones bolted onto the transom. Zero issues. I wouldn't worry about the location being a problem.
