After returning to the dock for the day and bringing the engine all the way up and out of the water, do you need to engage the manual stopper and then retract the trim/tilt rods back into the cylinders? I have been told to just raise the motor all the way out of the water, but thought I read somewhere that the rods should be retracted. I tried retracting the rods with the manual stoper enagegd yesterday but the rods wouldn't go back in without the weight of the engine pushing on them.

you read it correctly in the manual;

most people don't follow that procedure to retract the rods into the tubes and engage the lever;

never heard of anyone having any problems with just raising the engines (leaving the rods up) and just walking away;

if u are in a mooring/dock where you get some pounding from big swells from passing boats all the time then that might change your mind;
