Hi everyone, need some help. Looking to repower my 01' 282 with newer 4-strokes. Of course, 250's are a sure bet. However, I've come across a used set of 300's with the right hours and price I'm looking for. Grady says 500hp Max for 01 but have seen multiple performance test that show to the 282 with 600 Max hp. I know I'll have to increase the center line of mounting brackets from 26" to 28 1/2" regardless of F250 vs F300. However, my question is why would the 01' only handle 500hp and newer 282's handle 600? They are essentially the same hull. As long as I don't prop to exceed say 45-50mph at WOT what's the harm in 300's on this boat? Any perspective appreciated!

I beleive the Suzuki DF250s mount on stock 26.5 holes.....just did it on my Marlin, no re-drilling

Unless later years the transom was reinforced? mine is a 2004 and rated for 600hp. Weight would not be an issue with the newer model engines as there is only about 8 pound difference between the 300 and 250 Yamahas. Mine was repowered last year with 4.2 l f250's and they hit the 45-50 speed. Interesting I have never seen a Sailfish with twin 300HPs. I think you may run into insurability issues if the HP exceeds the hul rating.

I'd never over power a transom, especially an older boat. Check with your insurance company, you may violate your policy. While the hull size is the same, the newer hulls were beefed up to handle the extra horsepower. I think you know my answer.
Thanks for all the replies. After doing some research it seems like I need to pass on the yamaha four strokes because of their 25" width cowlings. That would only leave 1" clear between the engines if using the existing 26" centerline mounting pattern on my boat. As hinmo mentions, the Suzuki's are narrower, only 23" wide which works with my existing mounts and leaves 3" between the engines. To compare, the newer GW's with the wider pattern rigged with Yamaha's have 3.5" clear between engines. So, to save the cost of drilling new holes(which I just don't like the thought of anyway) and patchwork, I'm on a quest for Suzuki's 250's. For my own curiosity, I will be asking my insurance agent about the 600 hp scenario - I will share what they tell me when I find out. I honestly think the 2001 was rated for 500hp max because back then 250's were about the biggest you could get and rating for twin 250's yields the 500 max. However, as Fishtales mentions, who knows if GW actually strengthened the hulls when they changed to the 600 hp rating. In either case, I'd rather be safe than sorry and will go with 250's. Just FYI for anyone in the future; Grady White customer service (which is awesome by the way) confirmed that they did start strengthening the transoms while in the mold to handle the extra torque of stronger motors when they increased HP rating from 500HP to 600HP on the 282 Sailfish.

Another follow-up: Grady emailed again and sent a spreadsheet that says engine mount centerline is 28" on my 2001 (not 26" like they said several months ago). Then they increased to 28 1/2" . I guess I just need to go measure my boat to be sure. Either way, my local dealer quoted $800 to make new holes and patch existing if needed, so not bad either way.
Confirmed with actual measurement; my 01' 282 Sailfish engine mounts at 28" centers. Wheels are in motion to be hanging twin yamaha 250's very soon.
