I'm planning on changing the panel where my engine gauges are mounted -- but can't figure out how to unplug them. My assumption is that I need to disconnect each wire / group of wires where they connect and not the black rubber "plug" on the back of the instrument.

Assuming that is true, how do I do disconnect this off yellow plug that holds 4 wires?

I think you need to depress that tab I see in the photo and then pull the connector apart

Thanks, I saw the tab but it didn't budge and I didn't know if there may be a trick to it.

Given that it is more than 10 years old, it may be just a bit stiff. I'll try harder and if I bust it , I'll just have to redo it (which isn't that big a deal).

Don't pull the connector apart before pressing the tab. Press first, hold and then pull. You may also need to squeeze it tightly to 'free' the tip of the locking pin. Also see if there is another pin on the opposite side. I am not sure if there is but check.
